Lets kick off with some beautiful measuring equipment and it's even coffee related for some projects I'm doing. Micrometer (1 micron), depth gauge (1 micron) and calipers (10 micron). A pleasure to use, especially the callipers as my other set are Mitutoyo, but 60 years old (my dads) and in thou. DavecUK Perhaps it will grow on me….The Kafatek Flat Max with the Shuriken burrs though, is probably the best grinder you can buy for the home

How did you find the resultant taste of the coffee, @DavecUK ? For say light vs medium vs dark roasts?

For me, early on in my espresso journey, I viewed Monolith as the epitome of grinders. But back then I wouldn’t even contemplate buying one, as I thought that a Bartaza Sette was expensive enough. Fast forward to today, where it was OK to spend $1,000 CDN plus taxes and shipping on a NZ.

Are they still the epitome?

JHCCoffee no experience with Kafatek.

Probably the bees knees in terms of design and engineering but post-EG1 my eyes have been opened to the astonishing array of top quality 64mm burr sets for the DF64/V and 83mm burr sets for the DF83 or Duo and I have now lost any desire to buy a Kafatek or Titus et al.

For the forseeable future I’m going to more than happy taste testing 25 × 64mm and 83mm burr sets.

Burr swapability is now top of my list when looking at any new grinder.

Heck even 2 of the 4 burr sets available for the VS3 have impressed the socks of me and that’s a AU$500 grinder!

I got a few bits today.

I got the new PPS diffuser and shower block from Decent, as well as a matte rubber steam wand sleeve and nanocoated IMS shower screen.

The new group head parts are meant to improve the taste of the shot in the cup by increasing radial extraction and further reducing channeling. It also reduces headspace by around 1mm from the current model, and being plastic and therefore less of a heat sink than brass, it allows much more accurate and responsive temperature changes when temperature profiling. I haven’t had a chance to test them out yet but I am really looking forward to my coffee tomorrow.

Hi JammyDodger. What version DE1 do you have? I just acquired a pre-owned DE1XL v1.42 and am looking at upgrade parts as well. What is the impact on channeling, distribution evenness and taste? Were they worthwhile upgrades?

I also need to determine shipping costs, as Decent will only ship to Canada via their Express service, which they advise me is quite costly but have yet to tell me how much cost.

I can however have these shipped via Standard shipping to either the US or UK and then use ReShip to get it to Canada.

Might you tell me what shipping service you used and what the shipping cost was.

Btw, what accessories do you have? Did you get the refill kit? Were the accessories worthwhile?

Ah nice! Which coffee did you get from Wogan? I was there yesterday and picked up a kilo of the Mió Lot 1930 Brazilian, a kilo of the Aldea Capucas Honduras and 500g of the Colombian from Medellín that tastes of gooseberries and wine gums.

The Brazilian is very sweet, with enough praline/nuttiness to punch through the milk. It’s a lovely contrast to the Colombian, and nice to have them both on the bench.
