Adrianmsmith its the only coffee related purchase item ive had a flat NO from the CFO. “Its ugly” seems to be the sticking point.

I used to think this but I think having now owned something other than the polished/chrome box style machine have warmed to other designs and actually start to prefer some of them.

Things like the Eagle One, or San Remo machines like the Cube/You. Neither are machines I’d ever buy but it’s opened my eyes a bit to how neat little machines like the Decent are quite a nice alternative.

I’m guessing ‘CFO’ means Wife though so I know these things are non-negotiable 😅

Yes, seen some good pictures of puck drilling .

Again it would be good to see what is currently shipping.

Im assuming the guys getting puck drilling had a sleeve drilled too far from centre, with water hitting the edge or beyond of the solid part of the shower screen.

I see no evidence of drilling with my 4 × 1mm holes. When i can be bothered i may go to 8 but im already at enough area for full pump flow without restriction.

I just like drilling holes !!!

I say this without commenting negatively on anyone who has bought a Decent, but, I just do not get it. You are buying some very clever software bundled onto a coffee machine…..does anyone after the first initial flush, really keep a log and notes on every shot they pull? I presume you find a profile and settle on it, only changing it if the coffee dictates. I do not doubt the machine can do some very clever things, but in reality, does anyone actually bother? I accept I am a Luddite whilst other members have the sort of brain that likes to explore. I think most of us grasp water temperature and bar pressure but how many members really understand the impact of flow rates on a particular coffee? Just the thought is making me shiver!

I think it’s the repeatability and the compact nature that a lot of people like. Even if you only use two or three profiles, you’re getting a machine that can recreate them identically as often as you like at the press of a button.

I’m not hugely familiar with ACS machines you guys have but I think they do something similar right?

But many other profiling machines are manual and it’s impossible to repeat a preferred profile exactly. Not to mention the act of manually having to stand there doing it and the maintenance that comes with the associated group.

The size of the machine is probably also a draw. We’re all accustomed to having understanding wives/partners who let us take over half the Kitchen with all manner of coffee gear but I’m sure there are many who aren’t as lucky!

I’ve personally never been tempted as the profiling would be wasted on me and I prefer rotary pumps but I can definitely see the appeal and think they look very neat.

dfk41 How are you David? I completely see your point! As you know I’ve been on a somewhat similar journey to @Cuprajake and @Adrianmsmith ! And I’m now the proud owner of a Decent. So why? Well partly its the way John Buckman does things, partly its the whole fun of doing things differently and partly that having restored my ’67 Cremina I wanted the polar opposite. Best of both worlds. Its a bit like the for-and-against of driving a Tesla (I love my model S!!) Take care! Graham

You can mimic any shot thats been pulled on a decent, esp good if a friend has the same beans or you want to try

Me personally ive settled on 3 profiles, ive not dug too deep into the machine prefer to stay simple with it,

At least i have the choice of changing that vs say a bianca where you are limited or a lever,

Ive been happy with the machine, more disappointed with some of the coffee ive had this year if im honest, ive had some really good stuff and some really horrible stuff too

Im happy to say ive not had one single issue with the machine so far, which has now totally jinxed it.

The decent was a punt really after what happened with the evo there wasn’t anything i really wanted

I’d be sleeping in the shed if I had a collection like yours so I think you’ve already done incredibly well!

My Wife’s an interior designer so her response is universally ‘they’re all ugly so just get the ones that take up the least space’….

Still on the fence about the Philos! Not about if it’s a great grinder, just about if it became redundant …..

You have to have a bit of OCD as that is the cleanest oil free stained floor machine shed I have ever seen…. except for the car museum at Beaulieu.

I play at being a farmer in my retirement.
You have to have something to stay active.
The shed floor goes through dirty/clean phases, it is sealed and cleanable but machinery leaks.
Always.
The Studmistress won’t let me put in a toilet or shower as she would then consider it a “Malignant” shed.

I liken my coffee journey to that old Beatles song…. The long and winding road. Because it has been and still is wandering down that road, and always ends up leading me to Coffeetimes door.
