Hi Dave,

I’m not sure how you can see the inside of the side chamber will the lever is fully actuated without removing the lever?

Yes. It’s a lot cleaner now, but when you need an adjustable wrench every time you want water to flow from the group head, I find the inclination to backflush is seriously diminished!

Top valve protrudes less than bottom.

I just looked back you did indeed post a photo, valve pins look fine, it’s a better photo than the other one. The cam follower pins look fine and unworn.

What you do is put the lever handle only on the cam stem, sone fit the chromed tube bit…engage the lever at a 45 degree angle, so it goes in easy…then support it as you raise it to the brew position…then take a photo…remove the handle if it allows a better shot.

You will have to support the lever so it’s horizontal for the photo

Hi Dave,

Apologies for delayed late reply. I have not the time in the mornings nor the inclination in the evenings as of late. If I don’t put in 7 days a week at the moment my family will find themselves living in a building site this Christmas, which is a situation I want to avoid!

I just want to clarify - what you want to see is the cam engaging (or not) with the cam follower? If so, I’m not 100% sure how to separate the cam from the stem. Is it the two adjacent chrome-plated section la that need to be opened apart? I already had a go but didn’t want to force it, and it was a bit tricky getting two adjustable spanners on….

Here are photos at 45 degrees and raised position. It’s definitely engaging the cam follower, and indeed opens the valve a little water initially came out the group head as there was some residual pressure from this morning. It’s just when it’s actually turned on that it doesn’t work!

Quick question here if I may - even though I’m careful about keeping the machine as clean as possible I’ve started to notice some coffee residue in there also. Is there an easy way to clean this apart from disassembly and back flushing? I was considering brushing around with a small paint brush but would have to backflush or something after that anyway to rinse the grounds out. So, any experience with this please?

JahLaza in the cam chamber? If so I think that’s inevitable, and that’s what will dictate how often you backflush and subsequently lubricator the cam.

MediumRoastSteam yes, like the photo 5 posts ago here, but I don’t have as much build up as that at all. I have just started to notice some so would like to prevent rather than cure! My routine has been to purge with blank disc and water at the end of the day most days, clean shower screen every couple of days, follow a routine Dave posted elsewhere whereby use a small amount of pulycaff weekly or so backflushing to 5 bar and rest for about 40 secs repeat 4 or 5 times. So am surprised to see some deposits in there

JahLaza - as a test, if you do a proper backflush, rusher than a small amount, does it clean all those deposits?

I don’t remember seeing anything like it when I had an E61 machine. But then again I drank two coffees a day, and backflushed chemically every 6 weeks or so.

How often do you do a proper backflush? How many coffees do you drink a day?

Will check it out next time I do a full chemical backflush (next couple days) as I did a mini one as described above just this evening. I make about 5 a day on average between the two of us. I do a big/full one every month or so

So, I guess the chemical backflush is the answer then?

JahLaza Backflushing can only do so much, sometimes a manual clean of parts with a bit of puly is necessary.

Is there a general consensus on the best group head gasket for the V?

audiomacgyver - as for any E61 machine….

Personally, I use cafelat silicone. It lasts years (rather than months), it doesn’t bake as it’s made of silicone, and it pops out every time. Because it’s silicone, you don’t need a smear of molycote 111 on the face which faces the group, as it won’t stick anyway.

Providing you do not damage it when removing the screen for maintenance, it will do its job for a long long time.

Hi, does anyone know how often the pump PID gets a reading of the pressure sensor in the Vesuvius? Is there a contact at ACS you can recommend to ask such questions? (I’ve started a separate thread for the same question but forgot the word “vesuvius” in the title 😬 and maybe it fits better here anyway. Sorry)
