I have a wooden handled bottomless pf (generic) that I bought for my Elizabeth then a barista pro IMS basket in it. Will this IMS basket fit the supplied bottomless pf that comes with the Vesuvius?

So, my Vesuvius arrived today. I didn’t want to start another thread and this looked like the most appropriate place to discuss my first day! It left Italy last Friday and arrived in my house today - 6 days, yipee! Mine was definitely used, the plastic was gone from it, there was dirt here and there, spilled water underneath the water tank and for some reason the pipes going onto the tank had a black residue of some sort on parts of them. The panel on top of the machine, where the cup test sits is pretty badly finished with dirty plastic covering it but doesn’t bother me. I didn’t pay for a brand new machine I guess!! Assembling was easy as the provided guide is comprehensive (remember the first thing you do is unscrew the four screws on the top of the side panels, no hammer or anything required) The Teflon furniture gliders I pre purchased are perfect for moving it around on the counter top. A bag of felt pads come with the machine. I put 1L through the group 200ml at a time with at least 15 seconds in between. I then emptied the service boiler twice as per manual. I noticed the shower screen had coffee on it so I soaked that in puly caff and gave a good wash. At this stage I only had time to pull 4 shots as I had to leave! I was close to dialled in by the fourth albeit a bit long but I took it with me in the car- I have to say it was very very nice. So I look forward to playing with it tomorrow. I thought I had a dodgy touch screen as it didn’t seem to respond some times but apparently there are different delay times for different choices on it.. phew..! Looks a stunning machine on the counter and I love the almost totally silent pump. I thought the water reservoir wasn’t the best design but I think I’ll get used to it and won’t have to be refilling it so often when I’m not flushing the system through and just using it to make coffee! It really is a different operation to the Elizabeth but I don’t think it will take long to get used to it. So, I can’t wait to drink coffee from it tomorrow

Yes, that one way and even the whole brass piece has been changed. So I hope there will be no problem with this again.

I don’t think so because it’s never happening unless the steam boiler is hot. No problem with steam boiler off or not at a high temperature. So pid settings and pressure sensor must be fine. No scale or debris as the machine has been cleaned taking boilers and everything apart.

Can’t guess where the problem is but, as I told you, my Vesuvius is not the only machine with this behaviour. I remember a post on the old forum and my twi friends are experimenting the same…

tocateclas That’s very odd…it doesn’t really make sense. With HX off there is a mechanical solenoid disconnect of the brew boiler to service boiler and the route is direct from the pump. Even when HX is on the mechanical disconnect is only released, for the duration of the shot, and during that time water passes through the service boiler HX.

The above is to prevent heat syphoning from the brew boiler, which can happen on many joule boiler systems with hx preheat.

You need to do a simple test. Pull a shot no service boiler on (completely cold) and HX off.

Then prepare another shot, lock PF in. Then turn service boiler on and pull a shot immediately after…see what happens?

Thank you. Yes, it’s odd but I’m not the only one experimenting this.

Just have done the test and there is no difference with steam boiler on or off if it’s not really hot.

BUT

I think everything is related to the one way valve. This morning I have found water is again returning to the deposit, I can’t understand why as they have changed the whole piece. Later, letting the machine iddle for a while, with steam boiler off, I have experienced this overshooting again. Water came through the group before locking the pf but as soon I have lifted the lever to pull the shot, I have noticed the manometer didn’t ramp up normally. It was a little bit slow and the pump started to react to make pressure. This time it didn’t stop at 2 bars like in the video but take too long to reach these 2 bars. So it has accelerated too much overshooting again. What I can’t understand is why a hot steam boiler get things worst.

now, machine will have to return to workshop to check again this valve…

DavecUK Thank you Dave, I’ve learned so much about my machine from your posts and can already tell from what I’ve seen while scrolling that there’s so much more. Long story short, my 110V Vesuvius was buzzing about every other time I raised the extraction lever. Once every few months the buzzing would sound more like an electrical short and the extraction pressure would be all over the place (no pressure despite the pump running or dangerously high pressure, as registered by a group manometer). Paolo figured there’s something going on with the HX feature. I turned it off based on his recommendation and lo and behold the buzzing disappeared.

I came across one of your posts on the previous forum on tapatalk and between that and this one I am much more aware of what the HX feature does and more importantly that it really does not apply to my typical use! 😅

Ideally, every feature on my Vesuvius would work without issue but if this is the worst that happens to this machine, I’m perfectly fine with that!

tocateclas I’d recommend opening it and checking it yourself…..that one way valve may be exposing back pressure from the steam boiler HX, or steam boiler itself?

DavecUK this is the original one, the one they took apart. The new one (now on my machine) came from the acs factory.

Yes, this is what I think. This valve is the problem and it gets worse because of pressure from the service boiler returning back. I’d like to check it myself but I can’t do this, too complicated for me. The machine will return to the workshop and they will talk to elcor again. I can’t understand why this is failing again being brand new.

tocateclas I’d check the one way valve in case the o ring is split or faulty….or crud is in there. It’s the fitting on the left in the photo, just left of the expansion valve.

I meant to mention, as I was using my phone to post earlier…the test was to see if it was a weird software problem, but it seems not if it doesn’t do it with the boiler cold…so it definitely relates to having pressure in the service boiler. It’s also excludes a clogged or faulty pressure sensor. Worth mentioning if you do contact ACS again.

DavecUK Yes, this is what they are going to do but I’m afraid in a few weeks. I’ve been missing the machine for a very long time, I can live with these issues at least till 2023. Tomorrow the workshop is talking to ACS. Of course I’ll come back here as soon I find where the problem is.

I will look for the post in the other forum, I think there were some other videos like mine.

I wrote to Paolo last week but no reply at this moment… Next week the workshop will try to contact them.

This one-way valve is obviously defective, it’s working worse as the old one they changed. I don’t know if the problem will be the spring or the o-ring or whatever but almost everytime you switch the machine on about 120-150ml of water are returning to the deposit from the coffee boiler when it gets hot. I can not understand how this is happenning again, two of two… First one could be some scale (despite boilers and everything was very very clean) but now everything is new and scale free… It’s a nuisance to get this fail from a brand new piece which takes a lot of work to install, even more if you are not skilled enough to do it yourself.

I will update next week with good news I hope!

Just a question to know if it’s safe or not to use the machine with this problem. I have measured how much water is leaving the coffee boiler and it’s about 270ml, not the 150ml I thought first. My concern is if the heating element could be exposed without water or if it will be under the water level.

i have measured it making a mark on the deposit with the machine cold (making sure the brew boiler was full) and taking out with a syringe the extra water above the mark.

tocateclas if it’s that much coming from the brew boiler, you might risk exposing the boiler element.

That said I’m pretty sure it fills the brew boiler from the top so really only steam can get out and condense. Over what period does this amount come out…is this with steam boiler off?

Also, did they install the distribution unit correctly? Additionally 1 new machine ages ago was missing an entire o ring from the 1way valve and it leaked back badly.

Not sure how long does this water tace to come out because it isn’t happening every time I switch the machine on. I’ll try to find this out. It’s happening whether the steam boiler is on or off, I think there is no difference.

What is happening always with the steam boiler on (and hot) is that interference in the profile shown in the video.

I can’t say about the installation but I trust the workshop, they are oficial service of many brands and they only work for business, coffee shops and restaurants. Apart from this, the piece arrived mounted from factory, all the had to do was connecting it to the machine pipes.

Yes, I remember that vesuvius comming with no o-ring, I talked to his last owner about it.

Inspired by @Cuprajake modding of his Evo so decided to vinyl wrap sides and back of my V.
Initially went with wrapping around the front edge of side panels but wasn’t pleased with the overlap on the edges which were an eyesore every time I approached it.

Happy with it now and as my sits directly next to the kitchen sink it was constantly covered with water spots etc. the black Matt vinyl is so much more forgiving ! Over the last few days I could barely see a mark and no need for polishing just wipe it off.

I’ve wanted a Vesuvius for years, then the Evo came out. Neither is currently an option as I just don’t have the space but hopefully that will change. Besides one being a lever, how would those of you who have used both compare the two? I pretty much only drink espresso and I like the medium and lighter stuff. I’ve always had Pavonis and will always keep one so I don’t feel the need to have a lever just something that makes amazing espresso.

DavecUK Hopefully it will happen at some point and even better if a second hand one pops up. Why do you suggest the Evo over the Vesuvius, does the lever just produce a better shot?
