What’s the run-out when grinding beans?

if you mean the in-out ratio, it is 17 in, 17 out for me 90% of the time.

    The other 10% is +/- 0,1 grams.

mackerel That’s a sign that your scales aren’t the right resolution to test dose consistency. You really need 0.01g scales …unless you’re not “testing” of couurse, just having happy life! :-)

Beans weigh about 0.18g each, so you can only dose wholebean to about 0.1g, then you have the impact of the grinder on top of that.

nah, i doubt that you taste the difference between 0.1 and 0.01 grams of coffee.

I am totally fine with weighing to .1 digit :)

Of course i am not testing. Just normal home use.

        MWJB O-o

I am not gonna do that test…. it’s gonna do a mess xD

        8 days later

Hola, just got my Deva yesterday - the start/stop button is stuck “on”. I reached out to Kopi Concepts and they are sending me a replacement button. It seems to be a known issue, caused during the shipping process. They said I shouldn’t use the grinder at all until the button is replaced, hard to swallow after 1 yr of waiting. Oh well, what’s another few days. Kopi has been very responsive and very helpful.

Had a quick question. According to the invoice, the touch point is 6.2 on the dial, and espresso default is 6.5. I read above that Kopi ensured all grinders would be “zero’ed”, so I find this a little strange, that’s it’s not zero’ed, but I guess it doesn’t make any difference, just a chance of accidental touching. Any concerns or similar experience?

        Thanks for reading.

Too bad in case of the on/off button.

In case of the touching point i think you got that wrong.

Every Deva owner gets an email and it also comes on paper with the grinder where it says “to note straight away is that the alignment of each Deva is unique as it is assembled by hand. ” You then get the touching point where your individual grinders’ burrs touch. Mine is 5.9.

They never said the dial will start from 0, they said you will get your individual deafult setting.

To me it is not an issue at all. This grinder is a steal for its build quality and its grinding result. On par with the P64 i would say. Way better than the DF64.

I had the similar Stuck Button together with a cannot charge issue., but was resolved by sending it back. Yes the Touch point differs from machine to machine, especially if the burrs are different. I used a red marker to mark out the burr touch point on the dial.

So far this grinder (stock burrs) performs very welll in the cup, there is a noticeable difference in body (increased) vs my conicals and the DF64. The shots from the Kopi deva reminds me of the Bentwood, with simliar heighten texture.

My shots generally taste best in the 20s range with a lower pressure.

The stock burrs are really very good. I drink medium to dark roasts and they work very well in that range.

rytopa Still waiting for mine, ordered with SSP HU but sounds like the stock burrs are super! Will need to try both, was also thinking about buying original mazzers but they are probably very close to the stock burrs.

yes, they are Mazzer reps (ref. to the kickstarter Deva), so no need to spend extra on that.

Just curious for those using the Kopi Deva, what is ur grind setting generally? i am usually 1-2 ticks away from burr touch using 17-18g in Strada 17 g basket.

              rytopa

my burrs touch at 5.9. I grind between 6.2 and 6.6 depending on roast type, freshness etc. .

Btw, Each time You remove the bottom burrs and remove the upper casing for the upper burrs your touch point will change.

Spent an hours time mastering the alignment. You gotta align the top and bottom burrs on their holders.

Typical aluminum will do fine (The one you use on the oven :P). You just tear it as strips and put it in the outter side for the top burr and inner for the bottom burr. Takes time but worth it to align them togather.

Also when aligning the bottom burr plane wise (where you tighten the below bolt), don’t be afraid to have the burrs touch. THEY NEED TO TOUCH to align the bottom burr.

Back to the touching point, When I got the deva the burrs where touching at 5.6 me thinks. After the first dismantling I got them touch at 0. Once I installed the SSP Lab sweets (because they are thicker than the original burrs), Touch point was at 3.1.

I did it the way they explain it here Burrs and cleaning.

No extra foil needed and touching point was the same.

Description of the Deva’s allignment is this: The DEVA uses patent pending technology to achieve parallel burr alignment, and can be dismantled and reassembled without losing your grind setting. The double bearing design and machining tolerances of 0.012mm all play a part in the perfect alignment of the burr set.

Does anyone have any info on how the indiegogo stock burrs compare to the kickstarter ones? It’s a little confusing, they said that they are upgrading the burrs for kickstarter backers, does that mean that they get better burrs compared to indiegogo and future buyers? Or does it just mean that the originally planned burrs for the kickstarter weren’t great, and they subsequently upgraded them for everyone? I backed via indiegogo and I’m wondering if it’s worth spending time to break in the stock burrs, or if I should not bother and just buy a set of SSPs.

I am one of the original Kickstarter funders. They recently told me there are ~95 of us with units so far. In Update #21, April 24, that announces the very first shipments, they also announce the upgrade to coated burrs, increasing lifespan from 250kg to 750kg. I believe all kickstarters have or will receive the coated burrs, I guess the Mazzer replicas from/thru Nuova Ricambi. discussed in this thread, which also notes Indiegogo campaign funders will get the ‘same’ style burrs, but from Machina Keber. I would think any spec on the Indiegogo is subject to change though. I am waiting for my start/stop button replacement and will report out my experience with the kickstarter OEM burrs once I can start grinding!

mackerel Let me show you the shaft alignment chart, that will help you understand why I am making sure the burrs are centered.

Shaft misalignment usually leads to angular misalignment. This is usually inherent and mitigated with design considerations. For example, The mailable piece they are using in the deva helps in resolving it somewhat and their good readings on the shaft makes it better.

Aligning the burrs through making sure they sit right smack in the middle of the carriers (if their spec is decent) will minmize the parallel misalignment. It is basically making sure that the burrs grind in a very uniform manner.

gobucks They stated that the indiegogo ones will be upgraded to coated mazzers. @DavecUK confirmed that the ones that shipped with the Kickstarter were OEM non-mazzer ones.

powderhorn That’s surprising that so many of the kickstarter units remain to be shipped out, since their indiegogo comments still suggest they’re on track for August delivery for those units. Hopefully the pace will be picking up soon.
