Not sure, if we have a thread for this. I couldn’t find. This is one of my favourite brews. It’s faster, easier and always give a lovely cup - be it @"MWJB"#139’s or Hoffman’s method. Mostly, I use Mark’s as I find the cup is a little cleaner than Hoffman’s. Yesterday, I opened the [Ethiopian Haru Washed](https://www.thomsonscoffee.com/products/ethiopia-haru?_pos=2&_sid=4420db8ae&_ss=r&variant=39311835398231). Pulled a few shots and brewed on Clever. The cups were ok. I wasn’t impressed, given the cup score of 87.25. I bought this as a light roast. It’s a medium light for me. I am drinking a cup from V60 now after brewing this. The dosage details are: 3.9 Jx Pro rotations, 16.3g powder, 272g water and got 237g liquid. I used Mark’s method, 30g every 30s pouring in circles. The each pour lasted 8-11s. The last pour was at the centre. The total time was 5:01 mins. The cup was very clean, light, very smooth, full of citrus flavours and sweet citrus notes, which are Bergamot orange. As a result, there is a little bit of fruity bitterness, which also creeps in disturbing what is otherwise a good bag. I am therefore not a great fan of this bag. If one is brewing this exclusively or drinking it as a long black, it is good as long as one is aware of the tiny fruity bitter aftertaste. It won’t cut with milk! We buy beans, which can be a very good milk-based coffee and also pull a nice brew. I don’t think I will buy this bag again. It is not for us. It was good buy considering I paid about £23 for a KG vs the full price of £33 and has a cup score of 87.25. If you want to buy, please try a smaller bag and see if this is for you.

I do enjoy a V60 from time to time as well.

@"DavecUK"#p15221 How clean, easy and very good the cup has become, thanks to a lot of hard work and contributions by @"MWJB"#139 and Hoffman. I don’t even have to wonder what my grind size is. Just start with the same settings and a few clicks change are all required.

Blackcat El Salvador Los Luchadores with a cup score of 86.5 Mark’s method. 16.4g, 275g water, 4:44 mins, 242g liquid. Cranberry and chocolate after taste for me. Very nice black coffee.

Thanks & you're most welcome :-) It warms my heart to see folk getting pleasing brews. When I first started making brewed coffee, pour over seemed seemed unfathomable, driven by luck/beneficial spirits and I, like many others, sought 'safety' in immersion brews, where you could at least dictate brew time & not be reliant on things outside of your control like flow rate. But, as I built a better understanding, I realised that pour over is certainly as predictable & repeatable as any brew method, reasonably quick too. Of course, I still enjoy immersions, but 95% (just a guess) of my brews are pour overs. Sure, I come a little unstuck every now & then, but usually due to trying a new regime/brew weight/grinder or setting.

Can imagine how hard the journey to where you are now would have been. May have taken you months, if not years, of dedicated research and hard work to achieve the expected outcome. Minions like us can now use your template and make a damn good coffee. Blackcat’s Ethiopian medium 20.1g, 335g water, Mark’s method, 284g liquid and 6:02 mins in total. Another balanced, fruity and sweet cup; had a tiny lingering orange bitterness after taste, which I think is the impact of the orange peel. I am grinding coarser than I normally would. I brewed this coffee for the first time. Perhaps, I will grind a tad coarser next time. **Django Santa Ana** Brewed 16g on 270g of boiling water using Marks method. Got 231.3g liquid. The blueberry, mild sweet blackberry and vanilla taste come out clearly. Considering I ground this at the lower end of the pour over range at 3.6 turns on my grinder, it did produce a slight raw fruit bitter after taste; the cup was very good though. There were no silts, although the mild bitterness call for a coarse grind; I wondered if the water was too hot >100C that resulted in bitterness. @"MWJB"#139 Given the tasting notes (blueberry, blackberry, vanilla), I thought the bitterness seeps through the grind size. Considering the other person also got it but only at the first sip, could you explain how does it creep in? I can understand notes like Rhubarb, fruit peel, dark chocolate, etc., producing the (sweet) bitterness. I wonder if Anaerobic natural process is contributing to the tiny bitterness. It is tiny sweet bitter. I felt it in the espresso as well. IMO, it doesn’t alter the taste profile, although does brighten up the coffee a bit. Thx mate!

If it's around the first 2 sips and a generic bitterness, it's likely fine particles suspended at the surface of the brew. Sometimes this just comes with the territory and I don't worry too much if the rest of the cup tastes OK. If it isdtracting from your enjoyment & happening all the time, grind a tad coarser and/or tray and agitate less. To me sweet & bitter tend to be poles apart, I understand a mix, but I'm not sure I grasp sweet bitterness?

MWJB we should know how coffee works well I certainly take your word for it, they do not draw down quick enough. I’ve been filter for at least 4 years. And now I’ve got issues. So is #coffeedodger on ebay when I’ve sorted a partial refund.

Crankhouse Costa Rica Cordillera De Fuego, Anaerobic Natural, Cattura Catuai.

12% 400 Kruve (12.06% after sifting), 15g coffee, 225.7g water, 192.5g coffee, and 3:08 mins brew time.

I didn’t realise I had ordered the green stripe V60 02 from Hario. That’s why I have been seeing a faster brew time of 3:08-3:10 mins vs the average brew time of 3:36 mins for the 12% recently.

Very nice coffee, though. Cherry / red fruit acidity, Cinnamon flavour and sweet taste at the back end and rum as a top flavour with its’ classic slight tart edge finish. I score this 8/9.

I don’t have the pink/black filter to do a back to back taste comparison. But, I really enjoyed drinking this coffee. As an espresso, the rum flavour is very strong.

The pink & black bagged 01 filters (medium crepe in & out) are different to the 02 green stripe (creped outer, smooth inner), pink & black 02 Japanese papers are the same as green stripe.

Clifton Colombia Nestor Lasso, Anaerobic Process

Nice coffee. It was like drinking a soft and a smooth fruit tea (stone or soft fruit like peach, nectarines). I didn’t find any hints of Melon or Thyme.

I brewed two cups. One at the usual 1:15 ratio and another at 1:13.33 as the former was on the lighter side. I prefer the 1:15 at 12% 400 Kruve (11.8%) scoring 7.5/9.

Edit: The brew time for 1:15 was 3:29 mins and 1:13.33 was 3:18 mins.

What can I say other than rating it as extraordinary!

The usual 15g, 226g water, 3:15 mins, and the score is 8.5/9 at 12% 400 Kruve (11.97%) Passion Fruit, Mango and an excellent sugar finish. Unlike espresso, it did not have any dry or a tart edge.

Darkarts Colombia Seven Doors, Natural Anaerobic, Caturra and Typica

15g, 12% 400 Kruve (11.8%), 225.9g water, 3:15 mins and a score of 7.5/9. It is a good coffee with nectarine acidity, smooth, creamy and hints of strawberry. There was a slight bitter / tart taste throughout with a dry finish. This is perhaps due to Quince that taste like citrusy. Not sure, I like the end to end tart/bitter taste. It is too dark for my liking. That’s why I try and stay clear of some very good roasters. I will brew this at 9% Kruve and see.

Another thing to note is the average brew time for 12% Kruve 400 using the green stripe V60 02 has gone down to 3:14 mins to 3:32:19 mins resulting in 18s brew time loss over 5 coffee bags so far. This is a marked difference, less contact time with water, and bound to have some impact on the yield.

@MWJB Have you tried brewing V60 02 green strike as 7 pulses than the usual 5 (in the case of 12% 400 Kruve for an example) to check if it compensates the lower EY that you experienced? Like wise, the taste difference?

LMSC I haven’t as yet, it didn’t strike me as a solution as the green stripe brews were typically siltier/flatter tasting, so my guess is that I’d also need to co coarser to mitigate this.

I do not find the brews siltier. I can’t comment on the relative taste difference as I don’t have the 01 pink and black. I will grab one. Perhaps, I will brew back to back 12% as 5 and 7 pulses and see the relative taste difference.

@MWJB Have you tried any of the cafec papers? I think the medium and dark papers tasted better than the light roast when we tested them but that was a while ago

InfamousTuba I have tried the dark roast & light roast…not a goer for me, so far (but the light roast are the worst I have tried). The med-dark roast papers appear to be the same as the basic Abaca papers and the boxed pink&black V60 01 (though Hario are being very cagey about any prior connection to Cafec).

So far, I still only use the loose bagged, pink & black 01 white from Japan, no idea if the green stripe loose bagged 01 are any different as, despite ordering some, I just got another pack of pink & black (so got about 150 of these to keep me going).

I’m sure I’ll try the Abaca+ in due course. I need to make some space, I have filters all over the place at the minute.

LMSC The flavour is flatter, notes muted, acidity attenuated - these are traits that I’d attribute to tiny particles making it difficult for the tongue to detect notes & acidity.

Just to be clear, though brews are running a tad faster and EY is on average a little lower (less than 0.5%) with the green stripe, I am not convinced that the brew time & subsequent EYs are the main factors in the taste difference.

LMSC I have only used the white filters.

The 01 white, Japanese, bagged x100 filters in pink & black packaging are tabbed. The last bag I bought ( a few of days ago) was from Darkwoods. Prior to that I bought the same filters from Coffee Hit in December.

Tabs don’t seem to indicate anything, without also taking into account the packaging, there are at least 3 different white tabbed filter constructions under the Hario brand (2 from Japan, one from Holland).

I believe 40 is boxed, whereas 100 is bagged. I am surprised at the price differential. £3.55 to £7.99 for a box of 40! Some sell the 01 for bagged £100 for £6.50, which is a good value.
