Anyone know where Skuma are with their RO Machine and if they ever delivered a test product to a volunteer on CFUK? I know they raised the money on indiegogo but things went quiet so was just wondering how they got on

All on schedule apparently. Test units were sent out and they took on feedback and redesigned certain features / functions - like increasing from 3l to 4l tank. I've bought one and there was a live demo last weekend. Expecting delivery in June / July. Really looking forward to receiving it. But still need to work out where it's going to go.

That was my original understanding of your introduction on that forum (9th August 2021) - I understood it was a crowdfunding campaign but I personally wanted feedback from a known reliable coffee user so never took it to the next stage Using poor water for 10 months was not an option for me so I got the Osmio and have loved it ever since including throwing our kettle away The whole Skuma situation went quiet hence my question

@"Uncletits"#p18460 since we had not yet developed the coffee concentrate and since we were already having some of our backers come to the office to test Sküma, we decided not to send the units to the CFUK volunteers for now. That said, we’ve recently worked with a few coffee guys and we have a formulation we are pretty proud of. We’ll do the announcement soon!

This is great news, as long as the formulation to be used in espresso machines is non-scaling, I might be your next customer! 😊👍 But the non-scaling factor becomes irrelevant for pour overs, as there’s no boilers and above boiling point temperatures involved.

Also, do you know how much the filters will cost, or the infusions? Also, would it be possible to replace the infusions on the fly, or have a “blank” infusion? For instance, can I keep the “hydration boost” infusion for everyday drinking, and replace with the “coffee balance” when filling up the coffee machine, or have no infusion if I simply wat pure RO? Will it require flushing? I’m very close to pulling the trigger, but would like to know a bit more before I commit. Many thanks.

The first phase of systems will be fulfilled by the 15th of September 2022 where we will fulfill 20% of the orders. Loads of good technical information here from some very able minded people. I appreciate the time, effort and knowledge that many contribute on this great forum.

I must admit though a lot of it is above my head. At the end of the day surely the question most people will be asking is simply based on one uncontroversial fact and that is that scaling is the number one killer for espresso machines.

So based on that fact, simply which do most consider the most suitable to feed an espresso machine?

The Skuma or OZ or maybe about the same?

coffeealex We haven’t seen Skuma yet. Both gives pure RO, mineralised RO and Skuma, I heard, allows the user to make their mineralisation. Skuma is cheaper with 2 years warranty. The OZ gives 3 years and additional 2 for a small sum. The OZ is available and ready, while you may need to wait for Skuma. Either case, you should refresh the boiler to keep scales at bay.

LMSC Thanks. What you say makes sense. In effect until someone who is a reliable knowledgeable tester gets their hand on one, and if i were Skuma I would have already got hold of someone from this forum to do it. Not sure why they don’t appear to have done that yet. Even though on paper they seem to be very similar as far as espresso machines go, I suppose the Jurys out until proper independent reviewers look at it. Would it not be amazing to see the likes of yourself, DC, Rob and others from this forum take both machines on a head to head with accurate hardness levels at different parameters. They do these comparisons already with say Profitec v Lelit, vesuvius v rocket etc. Be e nice to have a master review of water softeners on a video or even just a thread

coffeealex RO is well established technology, and remineralising de-ionised water is literally centuries old. The battle is not going to be on “who removes most minerals from the water”. It will be on “ancillary” factors such as convenience/ease of use including filter durability, flexibility of use (mineralisation, water temperature, …) and customer service.

CoyoteOldMan You are right. I was thinking along a too narrow thought pattern. These machines are more than just water softeners and can potentially save money. I suppose if you just wanted to soften the water and did not care about anything else you could just go down the zerowater route.

You could - if you just need it for coffee. Zero water guys add bicarb solution to the zero water. Please check the Zero water thread. You will get all information there.

Rob1 It seems that one of the topics that keeps coming up re water is that of adding back minerals where they have been taken out. Is there a calculator to work out how much bicarbonate of soda per amount of water to use in those circumstances. Am I also right in thinking that the reason to add this is to prevent corrosion and or improve taste?

I have also checked my water content online (although will get a kit to test at site level) and it shows:

is it possible to convert this to CaCO3 which would give a figure I understand reflected in mg/l ?

Should be fairly easy to covert hardness clark to mg/l with calcs online. I think 1 clarke is about 14.35mg/l hardness. You need to know the alkalinity too but safe to say that is going to scale up a machine.

Adding bicarb for alkalinity will help prevent corrosion and tame acidity in coffee. How much bicarb to add depends on what you want to add and how much water you have. Yes, there is a calculator for that in my signature…
