LMSC Seriously? Any tips for planting and growing please? Had some planted a few years ago and they never flourished.
It was old, old rhubarb stock that my dad used to have in his garden…..grew really well in the shade of a willow tree. He gave me a plant and I put it in the front garden of my flat where it never flourished. So I dug it out (it broke into 4 or 5 bits)…and tossed it onto a pile of earth and weeds in the small area I had at the back, a sort of back garden where I put a shed (but very small space). The pile grew slightly as I continued to sort the garden. A year later and that pile had 4 or 5 small but healthy rhubarb plants on it. They flourished there for 2 years until I bought my house and I moved them all to the house. I’ve given plants away over the years to others. So for me it was pure luck to find out how to increase their number.
I suspect it was a healthy root stock as well.
So when I want more, I just break one up into 3 pieces, plant…and it grows? Something I intend to do this year. Time of year to do it is probably when they go dormant in October and the leaves have started to die back. I think this allows strength to go back into the roots. I believe it’s also one of the 2 reasons why they say don’t pull Rhubarb when there is an R in the month.
