DavecUK strange. They make great machines, but not coffee. I had 1 espresso when we went to Rome on 2018. Never had another one. This was long before understanding what it takes to make a good cup.

CoyoteOldMan I do like an Italian coffee, and my experience of coffee around the Naples area is that although very strong, it normally has a great full bodied mouthfeel with excellent crema, and is also a delight cutting through milk ( with some help from the Robusta side)

Rob666 me too. I am still trying to develop my taste and learn to like light roast. I think there should be something I missed as I can see so many experts love light roast.

What’s an expert?

Surely taste is subjective? Whether you are an expert or or, is it relevant? I like the flavours of light roasts. Doesn’t make me an expert. Far from it. In fact, once I took a light roasted coffee to Dave’s and he thought the coffee was a roast defect, and he’s definitely an expert. It’s a matter of taste. There’s no right or wrong.

I think a medium/dark roast is easier to get right, it’s easier to to deal with and it’s a crowd pleaser.

Knluk I’ve tried to like the lighter roasts but truth is the whole family hates them. An oft heard cry of “If I wanted fruit juice I’d drink it!” We all like chocolate, caramel, nutty and smoky notes so, dark it is.

Rob666 - I bought some highly rated medium light roast to try. I thought that a good way to test my skill as it is trickier to extract. I think I was able to extracted some fruity note. It was some red fruit note. We were firstly very excited and then it tasted like some nice fruit tea with lots of clarity. Once milk is added, it tastes like milk shake to us. It was interesting to enjoy and “comfortable” to drink with. We went for medium dark to dark since then. But one day, I hope I can try one of the truely brewed light roast coffee to confirm whether I made it right or not.

Just show how subjective taste is. And, someone who likes chocolate or caramel, can say exactly the same things: “if you want chocolate, have a chocolate”, or if you want caramel or nuts, go and have them.

You don’t need to drink shandy in order to enjoy a fruity coffee. Similarly you don’t need to be a smoker or a heavy drinker whose tastebuds are completely shot in order to enjoy a dark roast either. @dfk41, as you can see I’m offended by your comment and I’m now going to sulk all day! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. I don’t really drink shandy, honestly! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

And with regards to the family… consider yourselves lucky! My wife drinks instant coffee! Whether I offer her a light or a medium or a dark roast, she won’t have it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think you are right, it is totally subjective and probably influenced by your life experiences. I personally prefer darker roasts as I like a stronger edge to the coffee, but nothing wrong with lighter roasts if someone prefers that. At the end of the day its all about choice and satisfaction, and to that end there are many different pathways.

MediumRoastSteam - my wife always use hazelnut/oat milk to make latte with the espresso machine. It kind of tastes good to me but I feel it is not real coffee. When drink black, she also prefers filtered than my espresso. I have not found love with filter coffee or Americano yet.

coffeealex when I read Dave’s comment on black as coal, I felt embarrassed to share that I had some very good espresso is many cafe in Naples. One of them was in the arrival hall of airport :)
