I do not see this phenomenon on my Evo one at all. There are rare times the water may struggle to go through the coffee - examples, Indian Araku, certain decaf. Loosening the grind or single tamping solves the problem, if the taste is an issue.
There were a lots of discussions during the first year of the Evo one launch re-the use of thick shower screens. Leaving the cleanliness of the shower screen aside, one needs to look at the impact it may have on the coffee. IIRC, it was not desirable to have them on top of the puck if one is drinking lighter roasts as the cup becomes mouth puckering, which is still the case.
Of course, the use case here is different for some here. I use IMS 26 and load 17-17.5g irrespective of the roast. No shower screens.
