Adrianmsmith do you reckon something is off with my Vostok or safety sleeve?

With the regular sleeve it’s a bliss but recently I opened the group to clean it and said I’ll try the second sleeve Paolo sent me a couple of months ago, since I gave up the last time after tons of troubleshooting with him to no avail using the initial safety sleeve he sent me.

Another thing I noticed is with the safety sleeve, even tho I dose 18g and use a puck screen with IMS B662TH26M, I always end up with a mushy coffee puck and water keeps dripping and going through the puck for a good 5-10s after hitting the 7.5 bars set pressure to stop the extraction…

I have the safety sleeve….Use a sintered puck screen like I do…bliss. I currently use the 26mm deep basket with 14g fill as my daily driver.

In fact they were so cheap, I even ordered more, a I realised rather than get the screen off immediately, I can use the spare screens and pick it off a bone dry puck later!

18g with a screen is probably contributing to sergiu’s issues. There’s about 11mm of headspace, so a dose leaving a 13mm gap should be the max fill. Without a screen. I’ve found thats around 16g to 16.4g for dark and medium roasts, to a little over 17g for some ultra-lights in the 26mm deep basket. With a 1.7mm screen, I’d be dosing in the same range you are.

In the 32 basket im on 19.5g plus puck screen.

I May be able to shave a few 0.xg off my dose . pucks are solid and I’m just starting to see rubbing on the screen from the shower screen screw

I got my 2 extra puck screens bargain at just over £6,…life changing, no longer to I muck about with tongs and dental picks trying to pick off the screen suctioned onto a moist puck. I now simply invert the portafilter on a sponge, clean the PF, pop another screen in.

Later when the puck it quite dry the screen falls of, I clean it and I’m ready to rock. No messy damp stuck and with 3 screens the system works great.

To be fair, this, apart from the logo is absolutely indestructible to the one from acs.

I wonder how many factories are making the 1.7mm cintered sheets?

Cuprajake I have to confess a certain amount of ignorance on this topic Jake. I still do exactly what I always did, which is extract double the dry weight in 25 to 35 seconds. My brain can just about cope with that formula!

I do not see this phenomenon on my Evo one at all. There are rare times the water may struggle to go through the coffee - examples, Indian Araku, certain decaf. Loosening the grind or single tamping solves the problem, if the taste is an issue.

There were a lots of discussions during the first year of the Evo one launch re-the use of thick shower screens. Leaving the cleanliness of the shower screen aside, one needs to look at the impact it may have on the coffee. IIRC, it was not desirable to have them on top of the puck if one is drinking lighter roasts as the cup becomes mouth puckering, which is still the case.

Of course, the use case here is different for some here. I use IMS 26 and load 17-17.5g irrespective of the roast. No shower screens.

I’m glad I found this thread as my Vostok is doing the same with a pre infusion pressure of 1.4 bar I am getting noticeable puck dents and the first drips of espresso are directly under that point. I have the same single hole setup - which I learn is the safety option (which is also interesting as it didn’t seem to be working when I slipped on the handle recently halfway pulling down).

I have been making good coffees for a few months, but seem to notice the puck dents more and perhaps I have to grind tighter and drop pre infuse pressure to gently soak the puck?

18g in and 32 out is my recipe.

Thats not what it is designed to correct.

I use 2.3 to 3 bars pre infusion

Set point will not change the puck drilling (much) if you think about what is happening…. As the drilling is done ehe the first few seconds hit the dry puck. Pump pressure / flow is the same and does not change by set point.

Dont get me wrong, im still the number one fan of the evo 2.

I prefer the blind sleeve to the original open sleeve……

Interesting to hear the way it is designed to work.

Let’s look at it from practical / theoretical angle. While I understand and appreciate the intent, the design, time and resources which have been invested, what are the odds some one will accidentally knock of the portafilter vs the lever slipping out of hand? 😊

There are no right or wrong answers to this theoretical doubt!

If this can be designed for the use case which is described here, IMHO, perhaps, the ACS want took at the other use case as well. My brain isn’t technical and will never be.

i would also on the mrs brazillian bean, how ever i used to infuse quickly then pull so 4-5s then lift the lever, i know some like the londinium style drip drip drip but on the evo for me that just really over extracted

I did try the screen once. Additional faff especially cleaning it later as I too have very wet pucks every time. Is this ‘essential’ and hence why it came with the machine? Thanks for clearing up the way the safety system works.

If your puck are “sloppy wet” you need more coffee in there. increase by .2g increments until you are happy.

I dont get the faff aspect of the puck screen

I use it only to reduce the dose. 1.3g approx to the 1.7 screen in the 32 basket. I wish there was a 29mm basket!!

One light tap on the knock drawer bar drops the puck screen a second knock removed the puck

Put the screen on the drip tray and wash for a few seconds , turn it over and repeat…. Spotless. Note I’m talking about a cintered puck screen which washes off instantly.

@dfk41 i dont think theres anything wrong with your method ☕ and even if i did, its you that drinks it 😁
