Do you tap the portafilter vertically on the mat (with a funnel put on to prevent spraying of grinds everywhere) so as to collapse and flatten the heap of grinds before u use the device? That is what I do even though I don’t get a mound on the portafilter since I grind into a cup. That may help your issue.
The ciffeetoolsCA device is also able to be screwed downwards to change the depth of the needles.
For me, I don’t find the device delivering better results than manual wdt when the latter is done well and with care. The utility of the former is how it automates the process so that when u r not bothered or have the time to do the wdt with concentration, u can hurry throigh it and yet be assured of some level of reproducibility and consistency.
For me, I use the 20 turn protocol and I don’t find it affecting negatively the distribution - on my grinds it seems to make them more fluffy.
CoffeetoolsCA bas improved their device to the 4.0 iteration and I have ordered a couple for both my machines and they are on the way. He has apparently added ball bearings to the operation to make it smoother and optimised the size of the device for the LSM 54mm grouphead so the device should fit better on my nurri portafilter, and the new magnets should help as well.
