Anyone remember the same stuff but in a yellow cardboard tube, about 4 1/2" X 1'' sweet tobacco. Also refreshers ? and licorice root. Fry's five boys.

Whilst on the subject of parents, they were partial to warm salted peanuts. Our local sweetshop had a machine that kept them warm. They were sold by the ounce and placed in a waxed paper bag which quickly became saturated with peanut oil.

Systemic My dad you to send me down the local shop to buy ½ oz of Old Holborn, papers and a packet of hot peanuts, with instructions to put them in my pocket and run home so they would still be warm. 😄

The tobacco came in Tins, but we were poor so I used to hae to buy a packet that looked exactly like this

Oh I forgot, I often had to buy an Old Jamaica Chocolate bar for him as well

The machine I recall in our local sweetshop was a glass box with a heating element underneath. It sat on the counter. The sweetshop owner would dispense the peanuts with a sweet shovel. It was the smell that always got me as soon as you walked into the shop.

I remember Woolies having a similar dispenser, probably mid 60s.

Yeah. Ours in Chester did. Also recall the wooden floor boards in our Woolies which creaked like hell.

My father has loads of these in the garage, they used to sell the tobacco loose from these tins. I also remember similar tins of snuff that was sold by the scoop in little kite shaped paper bags.

When I was a kid we used to buy sweets in the same kite shaped bags for a halfpence or a penny.

Fetching ‘fags’ for dad, it varied between Capstan Full, Senior Service and Players. In later life it changed to Park Drive .🙂

Everybody smoked back then. I was brought up in a smoking household my mum and four brothers and sister all smoked but I never did… except once, when at the age of about nine in the house on my own and I found an old pipe. Of course, I needed to find some baccy for it and went out in the street, where the gutter was full of old filterless tab ends. Got a handfull, broke em open and stuffed the stale and I am sure mouldy tobbacco in the bowl and lit her up. After a couple of minutes sucking on it and creating a smog like a Puffing Billy steam train, hacking coughs ensued and I had to run upstairs quick to the loo and was as sick as a dog….Do you think that could be why I never smoked?😆

At the lower end of the fag market. Rumour has it W D & H O Wills used the floor sweepings in this brand. Knew a shop in a deprived Nottingham area that sold Woodies individually.

Systemic I remember a slot machine type stall at the world famous Spanish City in Whitley Bay. It hung on the wall and you released a silver ball that went round a circular track and at the end were three holes. If your ball dropped through a certain one, your prize was 1 Woodbine!

Blimey I remember when corner shops sold fags individually and yes, some to kids too. Mind you, there was also a time when some adverts showing doctors saying smoking was good for you. I’d like to say we have come a long way since then but with the disposable vapes with the likes of fruity and bubblgum or candy flavours definitely aimed at kids still being allowed to be sold I’m not so sure… but that is an argument for another day.

Systemic That is the one! Further into the fixed fun fair was a shooting range that fired live .22 calibre rifles!

I remember going on a ride there that took you up into the air and spun each car round. The ride broke down. I was with a girl who went on to become a successful London Barrister who found it hilarious where as I did not!

Systemic You used to get the option of having a Guinness after giving blood too. Stopped in the UK in the early 80’s but Ireland didn’t stop handing it out until 2010!

Systemic I knew an old lady with pleurisy and part of her treatment (this was the seventies) was a half pint bottle of Mackeson Stout every day!
