It still baffles me when reviewers say “it’s a very quiet grinder” - and they run the grinder without beans… Speaking for myself, 99% of the time I run my grinder with beans on the hopper in order to grind them. Or maybe I’m missing something.
DF83V (expect the unexpected)

I know that it’s in the eye of the beholder by my oh my, that’s about the last grinder in the world I’d describe as “a beautiful grinder”.
I’m looking forward to getting hold of one and I need to reserve judgement of course but I’m not excited for it like I was with the DF64V. It’s just hard for me to imagine that it’s going to outshine the Duo. But the coffee world is full of surprises.
No mention of an ionizer.
I like the idea of an augur and the idea of variable RPM but I’m still left wondering if both of these are just that: an idea, as yet unproven in regard to making a difference in the cup. Blind test testing to follow.
But whatever the conclusion, it’s going to be interesting to put it through it’s paces.
Loonster you may have a point regarding the augur.
Is it just the Niches that have the little safety switch which prevents the grinder operating unless the lid is down?
Trying to think of other grinders that have something similar.
The Olympia Moca SD has the trapdoor which achieves the same thing.
But I think that with most other grinders, you can turn them on and then stick your fingers in but you’d probably need small fingers to get to the burrs. By comparision, that augur has quite a large open cavity above it.

Because they are trying to shill the product, not actually meaningfully review it. You are quite right of course, they run the grinder no music, then show a few seconds of jump cut grinding with music. After which they ooh and ahh about how quiet it is.
In reality a grinder that is 60db empty and 74db with coffee, will be just as loud as a grinder that’s 43db empty and 74 db full….cos that’s how it works.
The video I uploaded is from Joe of https://www.espressooutlet.net/ and https://www.turingrinders.com/
The video is pretty much a sales demo. He was very upfront about it. Much more ethical than the influencers with a pay to play game where if you pay, they shill.
This week there is an exhibition here in Bangkok, i’ll try to take a video of the grinder at works.

Many grinders have a bean diverter at the bottom of the hopper that also doubles as a guard. The df83V doesn’t have a guard that I can see and the the hopper is removable without tools. With kids in the house, this is idiotic .

chlorox I think I saw that it won’t due to the all metal construction and risk of electrical shock.
Edit: Maybe this is why they don’t have it.
Up for preorder, and does mention plasma generator…

Worth also noting that your discount code worked, so I took the plunge and ordered one! Just got notification that my EVO is now coming back as well. Just leaves the odyssey argos which has been on order for 2 years and I have a full house!
Very much looking forward to this grinder, praying its a decent upgrade to niche. Been looking for grinder with vertical burrs for a long time, and realistically was never going to afford a bentwood or nautilus so fingers crossed!

Espresso outlet also lists the plasma generator. So it looks like I was incorrect.
danielpugh great to hear that it worked for the DF83V. Good for you.
They are having a committe meeting 😀 to decide if they want to send me one for review. They are due to let me know pre Christmas but I’ll likely order one at some point anyway because I’ll neeed one for the Burrnament in March (where I’m blind taste comparign a range of 83mm burrs), because the 83V is build around a slightly thinner burr set than the Duo’s Mazzers, meaning that the burrs that don’t easily fit in the Duo should hopefully fit in the 83V.
For those wanting to take the plunge the discount code take 10% off the price and is tompolandcommunity
I don’t receive commisions for sales but using the code does build my credibility with them and it’s probably the number of people who have used the discount code that that has them thinking about sending me a DF83V for review.
I saw it “live” but was not suitable for test, i only could take few measures, 40cm tall, 30 cm depth.
It’s not the most attractive grinder. But then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
To be honest I always think the DF grinders are somewhat off in design & finish. When I look at the Timemore Sculptor at least it has some feeling of refined design. The DF83v feels more of a prototype than a finished product. Sure performance/price is probably hard to beat, but it does not spark the “oh I have to have this” feeling to me

More in-depth video including the plasma generator and declumper. Looks good to me, and seems pretty quiet at 300RPM. I’m biased at this point as I haven’t had an expresso machine for 8 months, so you could show me grounds made with cold water, hammer and a dishcloth and I’d salivate ;-)
that side switch though….
