Excitement builds!! Looking at the architecture it looks like someone in the UK too! I have absolutely zero interest in what the influencers think of this one, it’s a day one purchase for me.

I have not ordered the gbw allground - kinda waiting to see what the philos is like.. tbh nothing wrong with my current allground….. Still cannot see a price officially on the mazzer site - nor of they will have a reseller in the UK rather than a import from Venice.

I might’ve imagined this but I think @"DavecUK"#1 suggested Mazzer will retail this themselves and aim for a sub £1k price point (possibly for early adopters, with a later price rise). I’ve been waiting years for a single-dose, multi-method grinder from a heritage manufacturer that I like the design of. The latter two usually being the reason for me not buying anything yet. Tbh, even if it’s not perfect it’ll be an upgrade on my current setup and like the LM, just nice to own and use.

Looks great. I think I’ve read somewhere it’s between 900-100 euros.

Rumours on HB, so take this with a pinch of salt, are that the Philos has been delayed. Wouldn’t surprise me given the impact global conflicts on supply chains.

Yeah I saw that. Though made me laugh that places took deposits and then refunded especially as I thought that mazzer were selling them direct to start with… but theres no info in the mazzer site either. Just waiting to see the review tbh - anyhow my blind shaker is about to arrive - so something else to play with 😂

Yeah the retailers I've spoken to in the UK said they had no plans to stock it. Looks like it will indeed be Mazzer direct. I can see the reviews being disappointing. There's no shortage of low priced 64mm flats and people who don't care about build quality, place of build and manufacturer heritage are going to say it's overpriced and find plenty of flaws I'm sure. It's an interesting price point because you can get capable single dosers for half the price or less, and it's obviously not going to compete with the top-end grinders like Kafateks etc. I think the only way this will sell well in the current market is if influencers really get behind it. Then again, I don't think Mazzer necessarily need it to sell massively well as the home market still isn't their bread and butter. I'm excited for it and have said before, will be buying it regardless but I don't expect it to be a flawless grinder.

depends really, the build should be better than that of the df and time mores, you would think, but its a saturated market there has been a zerno fs and a kafatec and weber eg1 all around £1500 on the old forum

I emailed Mazzer yesterday and they apologised for the payments not being taken the same way as the initial deposit and they have taken my suggestion on board and all new payments will be made the same as the initial deposits.

According to UPS my parcel has cleared import customs so I’ll probably get the bill for VAT/handling quite soon.

Edit: Charges were about £161 for VAT and handling.

So roughly £900 all-in.

I can see them just not including shipping after the initial pricing or something like that. Whilst it probably varies hugely, I can’t imagine shipping a 15kg parcel is cheap, even at cost price.

Mazzer emailed a link to purchase and it was €859 (+ the €1 preorder) which was about £740 at the time. Then UPS billed for VAT and import fees which came to around £160.

I guess the €859 is the UK price without the EU tax.

I’ll definitely post my first impressions, hopefully tomorrow providing UPS don’t drop the ball.

Planning to do a few taste tests and then the acid test for me is grinding a decent cup of V60, then switching to espresso straight after and getting a good cup without any purging or cleaning beyond a pull of the knocker.

I’ve bought a kilo of Caravan beans I’m super familiar with for both methods so I’ll run a couple of hundred g through the burrs first and then taste it.

People are reporting the grinders turning up with coffee grounds in the burrs already (something I’ve found on new Mazzers in the past) so they should be tested and ready to go.

I didn’t actually read or follow any of the influencers, just took a punt on what I read and saw online. We’ll see.

On a separate note I suspect we are going to see a lot of Philos vs. Zerno comparisons online in the coming months.

Jim Schulman has just begun a review. As you probably know, Jim is a retired professor of sociology, is extremely good at observation and experiment design, was one of the academics who began alt.coffee in the late 1980s / early 1990s which later spawned CoffeeGeek, then Home-Barista. More importantly he has integrity and is forthright and lucid in his statements and opinions. The two opinions I value most in this area are yours and his.

Jim wrote the H-B Niche Zero review, which pointed to your NZ review for outstanding detail. (It was your review and his comments that got me to purchase one). He did the first part of the H-B Philos review and his remarks are found throughout that comments thread. I assume the Zerno threads will be similar. Jim recently added an Option O 98mm model to his Niche Zero, so he is familiar with the major contenders.

Yeah aside from HB, lots of user experience and reviews on EA discord, where the Z1’s designer also joins in. Biggest complaint is the wait time, and if the Philos is cheaper plus shipping now I can see why it’s tempting.

I think the Zerno looks great and if it was easier/cheaper to get hold of in the UK I’d have been tempted.

Looks very well engineered and I like that it’s made in the US.
