Excitement builds!! Looking at the architecture it looks like someone in the UK too! I have absolutely zero interest in what the influencers think of this one, it’s a day one purchase for me.

I have not ordered the gbw allground - kinda waiting to see what the philos is like.. tbh nothing wrong with my current allground….. Still cannot see a price officially on the mazzer site - nor of they will have a reseller in the UK rather than a import from Venice.

I might’ve imagined this but I think @"DavecUK"#1 suggested Mazzer will retail this themselves and aim for a sub £1k price point (possibly for early adopters, with a later price rise). I’ve been waiting years for a single-dose, multi-method grinder from a heritage manufacturer that I like the design of. The latter two usually being the reason for me not buying anything yet. Tbh, even if it’s not perfect it’ll be an upgrade on my current setup and like the LM, just nice to own and use.

Looks great. I think I’ve read somewhere it’s between 900-100 euros.

Rumours on HB, so take this with a pinch of salt, are that the Philos has been delayed. Wouldn’t surprise me given the impact global conflicts on supply chains.

Yeah I saw that. Though made me laugh that places took deposits and then refunded especially as I thought that mazzer were selling them direct to start with… but theres no info in the mazzer site either. Just waiting to see the review tbh - anyhow my blind shaker is about to arrive - so something else to play with 😂

Yeah the retailers I've spoken to in the UK said they had no plans to stock it. Looks like it will indeed be Mazzer direct. I can see the reviews being disappointing. There's no shortage of low priced 64mm flats and people who don't care about build quality, place of build and manufacturer heritage are going to say it's overpriced and find plenty of flaws I'm sure. It's an interesting price point because you can get capable single dosers for half the price or less, and it's obviously not going to compete with the top-end grinders like Kafateks etc. I think the only way this will sell well in the current market is if influencers really get behind it. Then again, I don't think Mazzer necessarily need it to sell massively well as the home market still isn't their bread and butter. I'm excited for it and have said before, will be buying it regardless but I don't expect it to be a flawless grinder.

depends really, the build should be better than that of the df and time mores, you would think, but its a saturated market there has been a zerno fs and a kafatec and weber eg1 all around £1500 on the old forum

Ah I see your point, apologies for my mistake. It’s so interesting isn’t it? I wish we had a way of finding out why this happens from a scientific viewpoint (hence my referencing of Gagne).

So, got bored, decided it was time to have a look at the philos burrs and give it a clean….

Stupid idea. Total waste of 10 minutes of my life.

Nothing really to clean and nothing to collect to weigh.

Its still stepless and still just the same as ever…. Just buy one if you’re thinking about it, but leave it stepped for the time being 😎

Hand on heart, genuinely as found after 5 weeks. Wont be in a hurry to do it again 😎😋☕

Adrianmsmith did the same thing last week and there was barely a thing in there. I am very impressed with it.

Started using it for filter recently and it’s such a breeze switching between espresso.

I’m really enjoying the daily use of the Philos. Similar to how I feel about the La Marzocco just being a joy to own and use, the Philos is the same.

I’ve had some great grinders over the years but something about the Philos is just a pleasure to work with day to day.

first shot after cleaning ran exactly as expected. no adjustment necessary,

id also been running the philos whilst disassembles to feel and watch the grind adjustment.

seems adjustment is much more precise than any of the DF style designs requiring spring pressure to be constant.

Can I ask about peoples experience with shot ratio’s using the 1200d burrs and whether they have a preference for longer ratio’s > 1:2 ?
Can you get good results using shorter ratio’s < 1:2 ? Thanks

I stick to 1:2, usually 19/38.

I’m using a LM though so no profiling, perhaps others with the Decents/Levers will have experimented with other ratios.

As much as all the different burr sets available are really interesting ,for me, it seems to make decisions more difficult and which ever one I went for I would be thinking “what if” and am I “missing out” on something another one has to offer. At least with the Philos there are only two relatively easy choices which suits me, I expect I’ll be the only one in this camp as people seem to love swapping out burrs but it’s my idea of hell.
Sometimes having only one really good option that gets you near enough within a range of where you would like to be is very reassuring 😆

Something I think would be really useful on the Philos is a funnel lid with a window in it.

The little ‘gate’ works perfectly as an anti-popcorn device and I love it for keeping the next dose ready in the funnel if I’m making multiple coffees. However sometimes I’ll close the gate too quickly and a bean or two didn’t make it through.

Obviously you can leave the lid off to see this but the lid works well as a secondary anti-popcorn when the gate’s open.

I don’t want to just bodge something together and spoil how the Philos looks so maybe a nice wooden lid with a 2” hole in and a perspex disc fitted in could work well.

Alternatively a clear plastic version of the existing lid would also work well.

This is one thing I found as well and if you were bored enough to watch any of my quick videos, you will see that without realising it, I got into this habit /routine :

Lid off, pouring beans, lid on ,grinder on, open gate ,close gate ,lid Up to take a look, lid back, flick flick flick of the knocker, grinder off.

Habbit already ☕😎

As for the hopper…. It does have a slightly strange design…

And very occasionally I get one or sometimes two beans sat on those small finger things!!

No it’s a little ‘gate’ as I call it that you open with a lever. I agree the design in the Ode works brilliantly.

The plus, although a small one, as above, is that I can drop the next dose into the hopper while it’s grinding and just leave the grinder running and open the gate when I’m ready to grind the next one, and repeat if I’m making three say.

The gate is very close to the auger so it works well to stop popcorning and 99% of the time all the beans have dropped through but it would be good to have a transparent lid to be sure.

Otherwise you have to do the lid check dance as per @Adrianmsmith post.

Same here.

Controversial opinion that a lot of people won’t agree with but I think burr fiddling as I like to call it is just having its moment in the spotlight. I’d wager the market for variable speed grinders with multiple burr options is fairly small when compared to the mass market.

There will always be enthusiasts who want to control every parameter but really I think a lot of people are similar to us and just want a robust grinder that can reliably grind the coffee we like to our tastes with minimal faff. The Philos definitely isn’t the only grinder in that category but it does do it very well.

To answer your question I’ve had no problems dialling in and I’ve put probably 25-30 different coffees through it both filter and espresso. I’ve left it in stepped mode and haven’t checked alignment and it’s brilliant.

Heck yeh, very……

First shot i tried took over a minute so threw it out.

Second shot ran for 40 odd seconds so i drank that but wasnt the best.

3rd shot was heaven but in effect, including wasting 20 odd grams to season it , it was nearly 90g just to get a good shot.

Just not on 🙀😋🫣🙃🥰

I believe they are still only letting you have one burr set with it. At the moment due to demand being much greater than what they can manufacture.

Adrianmsmith Hand grinding isn’t for everyone, but I will say don’t expect very consistent results with that much erratic movement. After having used a few quality hand grinders for a handful of yrs I can definitely say rate of speed and angle at which it’s held consistently will definitely affect the outcome. Of course that can vary to some degree based on the grinder design and burr geometry, but overall the end result can vary wildly if not controlled to some degree.
