😂 I was thinking exactly that.

I remember when I bought my £90 Baratza all those years ago thinking I was out of my mind spending so much on a grinder.

Now here we are and I’ve spent double that on wooden lids for a grinder 😅

It’s absolutely wild how easy it is to get deep into this hobby. I’ve been weighing up a £1700 pizza oven thinking blimey that’s a bit much, while sipping my espresso from a La Marzocco…

Fast forward five years when inevitably a couple of guys are over from Naples building a custom dome in the garden with bespoke mosaic tiles.

I’ve been cold starting as opposed to hot starting as many do mainly due to the lid which you can’t see through and occasionally a bean or two can jump back out before you close the latch.

After a fair bit of trying I managed to match a lid that fits so I can see through the top. Had to paint it black as it was blueish which was an eyesore.

I’ve been considering asking the guy who does the nice wood-turning on HB to make something but I’m slightly concerned about getting the dimensions slightly off and forking out for something from the US that doesn’t fit properly.

If I can find an appropriately sized wooden lid then a forstner bit and some perspex is an option.

HarveyMushman yes, wooden lid with Perspex would be ideal solution as well !

Had another attempt with the lid today as managed to closely match a wooden lid of a glass container. Drilled a hole and as had some old thick perspex lying about cut a slightly larger sized circle. Initially thought of just using a larger one but attempted to shave it off and managed to fit it inside. Ended up with scratches unfortunately while doing so. Not sure how to get around the hole in the middle .

That’s exactly the thing the Philos needs. What was the lid from? I’ve been struggling to find one the right diameter.

I noticed the plastic one has a rubber seal too so keen to get the right size to accommodate the seal too.

HarveyMushman what I’ve done is made a cut out of paper which I’ve got in the wallet and whenever I’m somewhere that sells anything that could remotely work I measure it using the piece of paper 😆

My urge for tinkering and finding things to do kicked in again. I was curious how well is it going to cope with grinding straight to the portafilter. The fork stopping the cup is slightly in the way so removed one of the screws holding it and the portafilter fits perfect on a stand.

To my surprise it handles it well as was expecting coffee flying everywhere. There’s visibly more static as the grinds get closer to the chute but it gets released with the knocker easily.

So I’ve noticed I’m not getting flavour through so much now. Any one else fancy doing a Burr exchange for a month or so

Jony what burrs do you have and what’s your location.

Id be interested to try the 189, i have 200.

Do not underestimate the powers of the human mind. You simply might have got used to the taste. When you got the grinder it was “bang, wow” - but now it’s just more of the same. just bear that in mind as a possibility.

Yep, same here.

I would say it’s because you can’t see if the cup is under the chute but that doesn’t make up for the fact it’s right in front of me next to the grinder…

So has any ody changed burrs on their Philos?

Mine came with the 200′ s.

Would 233M or 189′ s from a super Jolly work?

The i189D seems a bit expensive .

I believe theres some washer or shim required if not using the philos specific burrs due to the centre hole size letting coffee under the burr . Im waiting for mazzer to release the i189 and give them a try!!

There are a few articles around regarding non mazzer burr trials.

Will add a link if i come across something later!!

Adrianmsmith Question: if you took these Mazzer Philos burrs and put them in to a different make of grinder (thinking as Niche did) would it be just as good? After all, a coffee grinder is basically a coffee grinder which is a case, burrs, a motor and some design. I do not like Mazzer as a barnd I am afraid. They conjure up workhorses in a commercial environment

dfk41 - presumably it would not. Similar maybe, but not quite he same. There’s the speed of grinding and chamber design. Static. Retention. All sorts. A coffee machine technically only pushes water at pressure through a puck of finely ground compressed coffee, but we all know there’s a lot more to it then just the pump and the group. 😊

In my espresso journey That’s s been lasting for over 35 years I have owned a few Mazzers.And Mazzer is the only brand I never had any issue with .Non.

To me the best brand out there
