On further reflection I might have been right after all.

As Button One is usually set for preinfusion with the steam boiler on when the single press method (then displays ‘e’ icon ) is used this stops the preinfusion and the steam boiler is turned off.

MBdoc - the button will still follow whatever is pre-programmed for that button, whether with the steam boiler on or off. Example, 10s pre-infusion (and whatever settings for pump run time you have in the advanced settings).

If the steam boiler is on, then you’ll have steam pre-infusion. If the steam boiler is off, then you’ll have bloom pre-infusion.

This is all documented in Dave’s review docs to a high level of detail.

It is all quite complicated when you look at the detail.

The essence of my question, which seems to have got lost in the complexity of the detail, was, if the check process was even necessary with the new Marax pump - which I have, which way round should they be done.

Is it 1 flush the steam boiler (turned on) yielding about 600ml plus then either turn off steam boiler (show ‘e’ icon) or go into the programming mode and set preinfusion to ‘0’ - not sure which - and flush 2-300 ml via the coffee boiler ( presumably using either coffee buttons or both together) or the other way round.

If you can put me right on this I would be very grateful as I am still confused.

      MBdoc -

If you want to empty the steam boiler (service boiler): Do that with the steam on, at the set temperature of 135C or above (the hotter the better) via the hot water tap. If you don’t have the steam boiler on, then the steam boiler will not be drained, as the water from the steam boiler mixes in the brew boiler before going to the hot water tap. This is explained by Dave in the review/docs.

If you want to refresh the water in the brew group, then draw water from the group, with pre-infusion off preferably, otherwise you risk creating a void in the brew boiler.

Whether it’s group or hot water tap first is not really relevant. But, as already noted in the second post in this thread, I would start with the hot water tap first (steam boiler) and then do the brew boiler.

Thank you that is very clear.

I assume that by ‘preinfusion off’ you mean set it to 0.

Thank you for your patience and helpful advice which is much appreciated.

MBdoc I assume that by ‘preinfusion off’ you mean set it to 0.

It actually reads “off” in the display. 😉 - but yes, effectively setting it to 0. And to be clear, this is in the “normal” menu, when the machine is on and working, rather than in the advanced settings.

All very clear now. Thank you for sticking with this in spite of my convoluted posts!
