Hi All,

my Mara X has now broken, a little over 2 years old.

When it is switched on it trips the house electrics, this has followed on from a previous issue I had where the water probe sensor was not screwed in tight enough and had been spraying steam / water ( unbeknown to me) over the top of the boiler. When I found out about this I took the probe out, put some ptfe tape around its threads and popped it back in. This fixed the leak, but water had been spraying on the top of the boiler….

Anyway roll forward a few months to it now tripping the electrics. We’ve had a good luck and it appears it is caused by the 2 temperature sensor on top of the boiler. When I unplug the 4 wires that go to these 2, then the earth leakage stops and we do not trip the electrics. So I guess I need to replace these. Due to the spraying of water over the top of the boiler over a number of months, or even from new, these sensor do look a little rusty and nasty.

Does anyone have a recommended supplier of spares for a Mara X? Also one of the temp sensors has a manual reset in the centre, the other does not and has 140c stamped on the side. I’m assuming this is the temp it would cut power to the boiler? On the only schematic I have seen for the Mara X it shows these 2 sensors as being identical. They are different on mine so would imagine they have slightly different functions.

Any thoughts on where to get replacements or why they are different. Or even whether I shou”d replace with 140c or an alternative? I have seen 130c through to 150c. I’m guessing the higher temp may allow more steam?

thanks in advance,

Alan

    Could you provide a photo.

      Hope this works.

      thanks.

Often the problem with resettable limit stats that get wet are shorting to earth, this can cause electrics to trip, especially if it’s tripping an RCD or RCCBO where only 30 mA of earth leakage will trip them. I am aware that you don’t give any clarity as to what exactly is tripping, so I am going to make a huge assumption that it’s tripping an RCD.

The resettables (with the button on) have a route into the stat, hence a greater likelyhood of problems. To avoid spending more than you have to…bridge the resettable out of circuit and see if it still trips.

The self resetting stat is a safety stat that should the PID or SSR fail, will shut of power should the boiler get above 140C and changing the value will serve no purpose other than degrade the machines function.

I am very surprised that they have two different types of stats, usually a company will simply use 2 resettables and I am going to assume the resettable also is 140C rated…otherwise what’s the point..

I assume this machine has been owned from new by you?

        Thanks for your reply DavecUK

Yes sorry I should have been clearer it is the RCB that is tripping, and yes I am the original and only owner. Nothing has been modified or changed from when I bought it new from Bella Barista.

I doubt the stats will cost too much so I am happy to replace both, but I am a little surprised, as you, that the 2 are different. Do you know what they should be and the best place to buy quality replacements.

        Many thanks,

        Alan

Just get 2 resettable limit stats from Bella Barista, assuming that the fitting method is the same…choose 140 or 150C max.

Thanks @DavecUK i appreciate your time and reply.

Just a quick update. I have taken the manual reset stat out and have spoken with BellaBarista. The stat is actually 165c. The difference between the 2 stats 165c vs 140c is apparently down to the steam priority option, which I guess makes sense.

Anyway new stat ordered and I’ll clean the the boiler top and pipes up to make them a little more “loved” when I put it back together.
