I have recently been introduced to Audible. I did once try a talking book a few years ago and it sent me to sleep. It was just some random gadgie reading the book, line by line. But, my son got me a free trial so I listened to one of my favourite books, The Hobbit narrated by Andy Serkis. The book is not read but narrated adding in extra descriptions where needed. Serkis also is able to do a variety of voices and actually sounds more like Gandalf that the real thing!
Do other forum users have any other suggestions that are just as good? Credits if bought individually are £7.99 or £18 for 3 but it seems daft paying 1 credit for a 200 page book taking 11 hours to narrate or paying the same price for Lord of the Rings (which is next) that takes 22 hours 38 minutes!

They are offering a 3 month trial for 99p a month. If you really get addicted the 100 odd quid for 24 credits which makes them a lot cheaper
MattH I have a 3 month trial for free but it only gives one book a month. I have ‘invested’ a further £18 for 3 credits which will let me listen to the LOR trilogy. I think if you pick and choose your titles it will work out quite well. I did not see that purchase option in amongst the 3 they offered me but if I am still a fan in 70 hours or so time, I might take the plunge!
Lotr trilogy with Andy serkis narrating is a must. I really enjoyed the sandman series on audible. It has James McAvoy as Morpheus.
Little tip for you which might still work. Go to cancel your subscription and on the cancel confirmation screen it offers a couple of free credits to continue with your subscription.
Beware of losing credits.
I’ve been with Audible for a while and had run out of things I wanted to listen to, so thought I’d have a break, re-listen to some old ones and then choose something new. You can only have max I think 6 credits and after that you keep paying every month but you get nothing for it. I was not impressed as I probably wasted half a years worth of subscriptions. No reason to do that except ripping people off.
Just a thought - have you tried the audio book offerings from your local library? These are usually free and run through apps like Libby or Borrowbox. You’ll probably need a library card or registration to get started. My wife seems to access quite a wide range of titles and gets through 4-5 books a month.
