ChristosC A bit more retention than I would have liked at the moment (0.2-0.3 gr), but I am sure we are still early days and it will improve once the burrs are seasoned.

Don’t hold your breath: I don’t think seasoning the burrs will have any effect on retention.

What has ended the clacking of the lid for me, and stopped the little drop of coffee as seen in your video, is using a silicon sputum cup as bellows. It’s not a perfect solution - blowing air creates some dust that escapes and accumulates on the exit tube and around it, and also some on the base and around the grinder. However, it does get most of the coffee out, and 99.9% of the time eliminates the excess coffee fall on the base. So the bottom line is I prefer it this way and use the bellows every time.

Here you can see the amount of coffee that comes out when using the bellows. It’s about 0.5 of a gram:

    MediumRoastSteam If you can tell the difference of a cup made with 0.3g of coffee retained, you have amazing tastebuds.

    I certainly don’t, but I am just expecting a product to do what it says on the tin.

      ChristosC yeah. I understand. Sadly, it’s not Zero… well, it might be if you round down to the nearest integer rather than up. 😉

      I don’t get the fasination with all the zero retention.

      No grinder is zero retention, there’s exchange somewhere down the line. Can we taste 0.5g in a brew, I’d argue basket prep, temps, pressure have much more influence on shot.

        Cuprajake The biggest mistake Niche ever made was to mention zero retention, because obviously….that’s impossible. There isn’t a grinder on this earth, and never will be that’s zero retention. Actually that’s not quite true, only a grinder that’s never been used is zero retention.

          We are used to a Footlong sandwich not being a foot long, a Tuna sandwich not made out of tuna etc. I’d say with Niche Zero maybe more people are happy with the very low retention than those who bought it and feel they were tricked by a false name?

          ChristosC Doram Thanks for the advice re the bellows. But I think that I will follow @MediumRoastSteam’s advice and will stop worrying about those minor inconveniences😁

          Whatever works for you.

          I use the bellows because it stops the coffee drop on the base, not because I worry that 0.2 grams will make a difference in the cup. I didn’t like to have to clack the lid to get rid or it, and I often got the drop even after clacking. The bellows solved this, so that works for me.

            320 mg of sodium bicarbonate to 5 litres of zero water or 64 mg to a litre

            simonc Remineralisation is easy and cheap. Just need to decide what you want in there…

            I’ve experimented with MgSO4 and KHCO3 as well as MgSO4 and Ca citrate (“low sulphate” recipe) so far. I prefer the Mg + Bicarb recipe.

            @Rob1 ’s spreadsheet is a great resource: Water Spreadsheet/calculator

            Not a big delivery but kinda pretty. Wanted cups with artwork, Illy art cups are stupid money in Oz….

            Doram FWIW, I just replace the dosing cup on the base immediately after putting ground coffee into filter….if I don’t….. then I totally get it, lol
