Well, the postman brought the blank piece of olive-wood… but I think it came out pretty well, considering I don’t have a lathe.
CoyoteOldMan How did you do it?
A thermocouple thermometer 😀 just to play with in a non scientific way

PortafilterProcrastinator Much of it with a rasp, a coarse file and a drill press. A bull-nose plane to shave off the two ‘corners’ (I could not get a good enough grip on the round finished wood!)
DavecUK No beavers, hamsters or other rodents were harmed in the making of this knob.
CoyoteOldMan Did you put it in the drill press and use the rasp/ file while it was spinning?
I’ve wanted to try this on mine, but chickened out for dear of damaging something (including myself).
PortafilterProcrastinator Yep. I got about 90% of the way there on the drill press. Main thing is to make sure that the ‘centre’ is really in the middle of the piece. I drilled it through, and put a large screw in that I put in the chuck. It’s not super-nice on the mandrel’s bearings (specced for axial, not radial loads, but better than the other way around), but as long as the diameter is not large (I’d stop at 75 mm), it works OK. Choose the highest possible speed, and cut off the corners of square blanks into octagons.
DavecUK Definitely feels like a significant upgrade compared to what I had so far.
A bit more retention than I would have liked at the moment (0.2-0.3 gr), but I am sure we are still early days and it will improve once the burrs are seasoned.
ChristosC bit more retention than I would have liked at the moment (0.2-0.3 gr)
If you can tell the difference of a cup made with 0.3g of coffee retained, you have amazing tastebuds.
Don’t forget that, prior to the single dosing revolution, it was acceptable to grind to a dose of Xg +/- 0.5g. 0.3g is just over half of that.
Honestly, just weigh in and forget about weighing out or blowing the remaining grinds out. It’s not intended to be used like that. You can, of course, but why cause more hassle for yourself? Also the retention as you say might be slightly more as the burrs wear in and also related to how oily the coffee is.

Don’t hold your breath: I don’t think seasoning the burrs will have any effect on retention.
What has ended the clacking of the lid for me, and stopped the little drop of coffee as seen in your video, is using a silicon sputum cup as bellows. It’s not a perfect solution - blowing air creates some dust that escapes and accumulates on the exit tube and around it, and also some on the base and around the grinder. However, it does get most of the coffee out, and 99.9% of the time eliminates the excess coffee fall on the base. So the bottom line is I prefer it this way and use the bellows every time.
Here you can see the amount of coffee that comes out when using the bellows. It’s about 0.5 of a gram:

I certainly don’t, but I am just expecting a product to do what it says on the tin.
ChristosC yeah. I understand. Sadly, it’s not Zero… well, it might be if you round down to the nearest integer rather than up. 😉
I don’t get the fasination with all the zero retention.
No grinder is zero retention, there’s exchange somewhere down the line. Can we taste 0.5g in a brew, I’d argue basket prep, temps, pressure have much more influence on shot.

Cuprajake The biggest mistake Niche ever made was to mention zero retention, because obviously….that’s impossible. There isn’t a grinder on this earth, and never will be that’s zero retention. Actually that’s not quite true, only a grinder that’s never been used is zero retention.
We are used to a Footlong sandwich not being a foot long, a Tuna sandwich not made out of tuna etc. I’d say with Niche Zero maybe more people are happy with the very low retention than those who bought it and feel they were tricked by a false name?
It could be worse, if you go too literal, you might order one and nothing turn up at all

🤣🤣
Or perhaps one where you weight ‘X’g in and 0g come out?
Haha - yes that too

I was using Roman numerals. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😜👍
