Lelit Elizabeth first time naked portafilter

I feel like y’all are me from a few weeks in the future. I currently have the Elizabeth, ECM portafilter, 18g VST basket, and I’m supposed to be getting a black Niche Zero in a week or so (Feb shipping). However, in the present, I am stuck using my Baratza Encore and updosing to 21g to get a decent shot time (I can’t grind finer or the grinder will choke). I’m very jealous, and looking forward to a time when when I have become future me, dialing in a proper grind.

gobucks Oh yeah, the grinder is the limit for sure. When you get it, try the Lelit basket that comes with the machine. 16 gm dose. I am delighted.

dndrich Yeah I’d much prefer to go a bit lower, but can’t atm. At 21G I can’t really do 3 in a day or I’ll be too wired (although with the single dosing it’s less of a chore to switch to decaf in the afternoon/evening), I’ll def drop to at least 18, maybe even lower, but we’ll see how it goes.

Out of curiosity, do any of you also use a Chemex for pourover? If so, which grind setting do you use? It would be helpful to have a ballpark idea.

gobucks I use a drip automatic coffee maker from Breville. My setting must be around 70. I never measured it since there are no numbers there, but I put the silver dot at the calibrate mark for a landmark. That seems to get the grind the correct coarseness for me. My espresso runs at around 13 with my calibration on the Niche. I calibrated when cleaned using the Corbey finger slip method of tightness, so it seems consistent. I don’t plan to recalibrate unless for some reason the lower ring gets moved. The labeling on the Niche shows drip to be around 30-40, which is way too fine for my drip machine.

drdre89 It looks like a nice unit you bought. Should be similar to the Lelit in many ways. Let us know what you think when you put it through its paces. My Elizabeth has been rock solid. I think you had that OPV problem if memory serves.

MediumRoastSteam The Lelit pre-infusion is really nice. Using the steam boiler to pressurize up to around 2-3 bar is terrific.

They say it wets the puck with “ambient” pressure (whatever that means?) for up to 6 seconds … then it “slowly” ramps up to 9 bars of pressure. Will see how it goes

drdre89 They open the solenoid to the brew boiler which will be a little above brew temp and a little hot water comes out because the boiler is just above 100C.

Whatever they decide to call… “soft” infusion if the term they want to coin. Would be interesting to know how it works and how effective “ambient” pressure works if there’s no pump run beforehand.

Looking forward to seeing Silvia Pro X thread when the machine arrives. :-)

MediumRoastSteam It dribbles water out of the group. If you want to see what it does…next time I am round I will switch my hot machine off and open the group lever…what comes out is broadly what’s happening…bigger boiler larger amount, small boiler, smaller amount….Not a huge amount comes out….sort of just slightly dribbles out under no pressure…

Well, it wets the puck slightly I guess?….Better is a short pump run (configurable), then a pump pause (bloom phase, also configurable), with vent solenoid remaining closed, then on to the normal pump run. Perhaps it does that. If they had sent a machine to me, that’s what I would have recommended.

DavecUK Seems like a missed opportunity. The feature set of the Silvia Pro X is so similar to the Elizabeth, I would have thought they’d try to match the Elizabeth’s preinfusion performance, especially since it’s $200 pricier. It does have a bigger steam boiler though, which is something I guess.
