Love my Niche but looking at getting a flat burr grinder to complement it. Besides the Lagom P64 can anybody recommend another flat burr grinder in that price range or less? To be uesed for single dosing.

Currently have a df64 but stock is okish not worth it over a niche. Once modded though (especially the declumber mod) and aligned properly it becomes a very good sidegrade from the niche to try flats. It has its shortcomings but very liveable I would say. Otherwise the only other good option is the kopiconcepts deva grinder. I left out the new eureka grinder cause reviews and overall construction leaves much to be desired. King of the hill at the moment is the lagom p64 since it has perfect alignment.

@"DavecUK"#p11958 Df64 fully aligned (Dial Gauge) with SSP HU and p64 stock SSP HU. The df64 cannot grind fine enough to create enough puck resistance and most you get decent turbo shots. Carrier concentricty and general alignment is seriously needed at that level. Stock burrs are extremely decent and will be fine for most consumers but SSP hu 64mm is my main focus. The flavor profile is basically the perfect balance between conicals and flats. The current avaliable grinder with perfect alignment out of the box is the p64. The kopi deva has a nice malleable piece of copper that deforms during alignment so hoping it will solve this dilemma.

kopi deva looks nice tbf, ive seen a few vids on it, be nice to see how it grinds if you have the space there is a bargin of a mazzer major on ebay £400 5 months old, theres alot of 83mm flats for sale atm

Is the funnel a genuine Mazzer? I’ve been searching but the SJ ones are all out of stock and the Mini one is a different size I think.

I’ve ordered a mini hopper and the red speed burrs, hope you don’t mind me joining the Bianca+SJ gang!

Edit: I’m seeing conflicting reports as to whether the same funnel fits the Mini and the SJ.

A few posts on Home-Barista says it does, but Espresso Shop says it doesn’t…

FWIW, on the “old” forum, contributor JimboJohn had a very comprehensive walk-thru on modding a Mazzer Major to single dose…well worth a read. Under “Pimp my Major” or similar.

P.S…check out wooden jar lids on evilBay or AliExpress, cheap as chips

About ten years ago I bought a Mählkönig K30 Vario for about 450 dollars. It was tried for some days by a coffee shop and made maybe 200 espressos. And they scratched the back of the casing, something I don’t see on my counter. It’s still going strong after about 20 000 double espressos, done in 4 seconds.

Yeah I’ve just gone for Mazzer parts and bought the red speed burrs. I took a bit of a gamble on a Mini funnel… the SJ one is much harder to source and unless I’ve missed something, the diameter is the same it’s just shorter. Which is actually better as I intend to use a dosing cup. Places that sell the lids suggest they’re all 120mm diameter.

I’ve found a Walnut hopper lid on eBay and ordered a Mini short hopper also as in case I want to do on-demand and it wasn’t hugely expensive.

And as if I hadn’t gone OTT already… a Torrtoys stainless funnel lid.

Now if I can just find a walnut grind adjuster rod 😅

@Cuprajake when drilling the holes for the motor cover did you tap them also? Or do the threads just tap themselves with the screws.

Ernie1 I guess you found out the hard way but the Mini funnel doesn’t fit the major.

I don’t think stock mazzer flat burrs will be a million miles from a conical profile, both create a lot of fines.

Since we are on a Mazzer slant… Are any of their flat burr grinders quiet? I have only ever heard people mention ‘Mazzers’ as loud (or perhaps they wrote not quiet), but I suspect that’s based on experience with their lower end models.

Noise is pretty much a product of flat burrs spinning at 1350 RPM and grinding coffee… Obviously they are quieter when sound exit holes are blocked such as a full bean hopper…doser funnel lid etc.. I suspect it’s one of the reasons the Sette is so noisy, plus the special sauce Baratza added to the design.

One more question… will I need the foam gasket? I got the anti-static screen but not the gasket.

Edit: I just noticed in your video that you don’t need the screen to brush out the throat when SD.

Find a bargain price five-year old Super Jolly… immediately proceed to spend more than the cost of the grinder on new parts….

I’m happy though, I’ve always had a soft spot for Mazzer grinders and whilst the x54 is certainly nice to own/use, I’ve missed the Mini I had before.
