Someone asked if I would test the weber unifilter if they sent it to me. Sure, why not? Saved me risking AU$260.
Unfortunately in a 3x blind taste test using medium roast Kenyan AA beans, it produced espresso with more distinct flavor notes than the Decent basket. The difference was subtle but distinct enough to pick it each time.
To be clear, both espressos were delightful and I wouldn’t say anyone is missing out by not having a unifilter or wafo.
But in my limited experience to date, the unifilter definitely produce something different.
For most people, I don’t think the difference is enough to justify the extraordinary price but judging by the “sold out” sign that features regularly on the weber website, it seems that there are plenty of people willing to pay it.
Note that the Unifilter is less forgiving than a traditional basket.
I also have the BiT (Baristas Improving Taste) Renato basket which is around 20% of the price and claims to achieve the same or similar result. I have yet to blind taste test it.
