I spoke to Doug Weber about the Unfilter at the Weber stand when I was at MICE in Melbourne a couple of months ago. I was trying to convince him to make a hybrid grinder (conical at the top acting as a pre-breaker, flat underneath) but he was quite clear in his view that a large burr like the 83mm Mazzer Robur in the Key and HG-2, effectively had a pre-breaker built in because of both the height of the burr and the geometry. He took the time to show me where the burr would pre-break.
He was interesting to talk to and quite patient and personable.
His summary statement was to the effect that yes, he could sell a lot of grinders if he built a hybrid but that he was not convinced that it would produce a better espresso and that he was committed to only creating products that were genuinely better as opposed a gimmick that offered no real difference but that would sell well.
He seemed quite passionate about that. Which left me thinking more about the Unifilter. Maybe it does make a difference in the cup? I was so impressed I would have bought one but he had sold out.
I’m still waiting for a review from a credible source.
Has anyone seen one? Or perhaps our resident @lancehedrick has tried one?
Doug Weber may be right or he may be wrong about the Unifilter but I’m convinced that he’s genuine and that he didn’t create it simply for the sake of more revenue.
I’m just a bit frustrated by the lack of reviews to date.
