Boozy/Funky Green Coffee

I really enjoy a boozy/funky bean for espresso - can anyone recommend somewhere where I can get green coffee of that type of flavour profile?

Beverast I have recently been buying coffees which have been subjected to extended, anaerobic and other experimental fermentation processes. These have never failed to deliver in terms of boozy/funkiness! Perhaps contact a local roaster selling these types of coffees and see if they will sell you a few kg of green from their stock.

DavecUK That’s a shame - perhaps will need to visit you at some point :) Will have to keep an eye out for the Dragones Natural - I see one retailer in the UK has it, but £108 for 2kg, assuming they roast it. How much do you think the green coffee should retail at per kg?

I did another roast from CGLE today as well..their Sidra Natural. Ground beans smell nice and funky/boozy (aroma fills the whole kitchen) and the pulled shot tasted good - Roasted that RTD as well, so wil taste again tomorrow. Only thing is I only have 350 grams of it so not much left. I have around a kilo of their Sidra Washed to try soon, so hoping that will also have some funkiness.

Could you please share a couple of these coffees?

I’ve only tried one , it was a Brazilian from Jorge Bakarat but is now out of stock everywhere.

Beverast I buy direct wholesale, so have to buy 25Kg of it vac packed and spend over £300+ delivery. Retail I don’t know what they would charge for green coffee.

I charge my roast sharers about £11 for 434g, roasted, which just covers my costs and risks.

Just curious… I don’t drink so could you guys explain what you mean by boozy? Is it a flavour thing? Or is there more that comes into it like texture and mouthfeel? Or does it actually have a bit of sedative/euphoric effect like alcohol? Is there any difference if it’s say more wine-like (which is a pretty common flavour note description) versus more vodka-like (think I’ve seen rum flavour note but never vodka)?

I have seen beans for sale that were actually processed in rum…

There’s no alcohol or euphoric effect, beyond the normal caffeine hit. For the coffee I have, it smells strongly of sherry and cider, definite taste as well, not a suggestion, or needing to be trained, it’s completely in your face. So much so it still comes through strongly when blended 50/50. I blend it with a rich chocolaty Brazilian (for my own use).

Waitforme The two most recent coffees I have bought (as greens) were Nicaragua - Finca Santa Maria de Lourdes, and Honduras Finca Las Casitas. Not sure which roasters (if any) are stocking these at the moment. However, a quick google search shows that Velo, Clifton and Alchemy all have anaerobic coffees in stock. There will be others I’m sure. Hope this helps.

Colombian Anaerobic Diofanor Ruiz from Foundry was excellent. I still have some frozen and would buy it again for sure!

Contrasting to that, I had some Colombian anaerobic from TripleCo roaster in Bristol and it was like drinking finely crushed lumpwood charcoal with boiling water. Horrible. I paid good money for it, and the flavours were not there, at all. I even shared with another friend and his thoughts were the same. I emailed TripleCo who came up with a possible reason why it was like that and offered me a 20% discount next time. Well, 800g of expensive coffee in the bin, and one customer never to return.

That’s a shame. Some time, it does back fire very badly. These instances are between a far and a few. But, we always left wondering how to finish the rest of a KG. We don’t bin for sure.

Perhaps, a smaller bag to see if it is palatable would be better.

Just to be clear, I didn’t bin it. It was figurative. 😊 - I gave it to friends who are less concerned with taste and value the effects of caffeine more. 😉👍

Extract coffee Funka was good. We loved it last time. It will come back in stock in summer.

LMSC I roast 1kg of green, split into 2 equal halves and bag it. So the weight varies a little, but keeps each batch together, and allows me to bag it (still warm) while the next bag is roasting.

P.S. Coffee looses weight when roasted.

LMSC - Usually loses approx. 13-14% for a medium roast, but can be more or less depending on the beans and the degree of roast.

So in Dave’s case, looks like the moisture and chaff loss is around 13.2%. 1,000 less 13.2% = 868g, divided by 2 = 434g.
