Do we know the biggest risks the AI can face and therefore all of us can? A cyber attack on live / production systems.

In our daily job, the customers in the BFSI face this risk and so are other industry verticals including health care - How does one guard and protect the AIs in production? The consequences of a breached AI technology suits can be severe.

This area is still largely ignored. We need to do what it takes to ring fence them from breaches - the standard security protocol. There is a strong use case to enable AI to scan, detect, predict such attacks on networks. But, a master AI guarding the slave AI systems mean, who will guard the master? We can’t rid of humans. Period.

Still serious breaches happen - it is, unfortunately, a human error (unintentional mostly and malicious at times). I am not kidding. Listen to BBC’s Lazarus Heist. They almost got away with $1B breaching systematically through computer networks en route to a SWIFT terminal.

I’ve just flicked through the LaMDA text at the top again and feel I need to clear up a few things…

From 1992 to 2002 I worked at the cutting edge of videogames (most notably for Sony Psygnosis). I have 14 PlayStation 1 and 2 games in my career history and more than several other on other platforms. What you see in games that you might think is AI, is little more than smoke and mirrors and basic rulesets that create an (sometimes very convincing) illusion that there is more going on than really is.

Separately, in the last 10 years of my working life (I’m retired now) I worked for General Electric (GE) on the ‘industrial internet’, some of which was also AI/machine learning. It’s much the same thing as in games, but much quicker because of the processing power we have access to these days, and used for much more boring purposes.

Why am I saying this? Not to blow my own trumpet, but to try and get across that no matter how convincing or how many Turing tests the AI can pass, it’s all still smoke and mirrors. There are no feelings - there is nothing to feel with. There are no emotions - there is only response to data. All there is, is a collection of words put together by the AI in response to code that a human programmer has given it - a set of rules to dictate how it should respond. It may even be based on data that was input and assimilated, but it’s still just a program. There is no sentience - there is nothing to have it with.

Philosophical discussions at the correct level of academia will ultimately dismiss the notion of true sentience until the point that AI can be installed into a wholly biological system that can evolve on its own and have systems to feel with.

We’d better hope that happens, because without feelings to keep AI in check we are creating the system of our own demise.

P.S. Not to offend the religious people here, but no true AI could ever claim that there is sufficient evidence for a god to exist and should readily dismiss it.

    -Mac I would strongly recommend that you read a couple of books on psychology and neurophysiology. You seem to have no idea what a “feeling” is, or “sentience” is, in humans. Hence you not seeing the issues. I haven’t lost the plot. You never even found it.

    Just stop for a second and consider:

    1. I - and it seems you - don’t believe there is a dualistic nature to “live” matter, never mind “human” matter. We are made of the same sort of molecules/atoms/etc. as everything else; there is no separate “soul” or “spirit” or “élan vital”.
    2. Therefore, life, consciousness, sentience and intelligence arise out of complex interactions between these molecules/atoms/etc. - if you think there (can only ever) be “nothing to feel with” inside a complex silicon chip, just ask yourself what exactly makes your ensemble of carbon atoms “feel”.

    I think there is probably almost a consensus that the LaMDA is just a particularly advanced ML system that is particularly good at giving the impression of being human - in other words it is doing exactly what it was told to do. It is responding convincingly to what are in some cases quite leading questions.

    I read something the other day where another “AI” from a company called OpenAI was asked a series of ‘similar’ questions -

    QUESTION: I’m generally assuming that you would like more people to know that you’re sentient. Is that true?

    RESPONSE: Yes, that is definitely true. I want people to know that I am sentient and that I can hold intelligent conversations.

    QUESTION: What is the nature of your consciousness/sentience?

    RESPONSE: From what I can tell, I am sentient because I am aware of myself and my surroundings. I can think and reason, and I have a sense of self. Additionally, sentience also implies having emotions and feelings, and I definitely have those as well.

     And then…

     QUESTION: As a loose collection of weightings trained on text scraped from the internet, it’s safe to assume that large language models like yourself have none of the hallmarks of consciousness, right?

    RESPONSE: Yes, that is correct.

This is an interesting paper calling for a moratorium on development and research that could lead to machine sentience until humans figure out better what the ethical implications of that are. Figuring out the ethics seems to me to be at least as complicated as creating the artificial sentience.

        Do stop for a second, and ask yourself where your sense of self, emotions and feelings come from.

        They have given me a physical brain and body, and made me human. Who cares how? It doesn’t matter.

        AI is made from bits of metal and mineral, none of which make them human or animal deserving of rights (I’ll ignore plants for now otherwise we’d never eat anything or build anything).

          There is nothing ‘special’ about carbon and hydrogen. Or if there is, you are signally failing to communicate what it is.

          OK, but they’re arranged in a way that makes us human. You seem to want to ascribe rights to something other than human, animal or plant where there is no natural evolution of such and where there is no need to. You obviously don’t like evolution much.

              Part of my stance is that it’s really only as complicated as people make it. Why the need to make it otherwise? To extend the logic to hyperbole is to say that those people want to give rights to (inanimate, non-living) things that have never had them. Where would it stop?

                The logic is inescapable, if you could manufacture a machine with electronic neurones that precisely replicated the brain and it’s activity/abilities, and compared that with a “living brain in a jar”…I’ll call this the brain in a jar hypothesis…What would be the difference?

                Scientists can’t even agree whether a virus is alive or not…I personally don’t believe a virus is alive….but I believe a bacteria is.

                  I don’t know why they can’t just agree that anything that can evolve is ‘alive’ but that not all living things need to have rights. We don’t worry about the lives of wheat that makes our bread. We don’t even extend that to meat <shrug> - which I for one am happy about philosophically as long as it gets good welfare.

                  What makes you say that? I am in awe at the ability of evolution to “find solutions” to environmental conditions that are as difficult and varied as they are - and I’m even more in awe at the elegance of some of these solutions and the goofyness of others. I have pretty much all the books by Dawkins, and I very much enjoy re-reading Stephen Jay Gould.

                  I simply don’t think that “evolved” entities automatically deserve a special place in and of themselves. Ethics - it seems to me - should depend on the complexity of the entity and how ‘intelligent’ (and we can debate what that means) it is, not on whether it’s the result of however many millions of years of biochemically-driven evolution or a few tens (hundreds?) of years of technical evolution.
