I guess we all know that a lawn needs watering, but I was still surprised by the results of this unintentional experiment: I put a sprinkler in the garden to keep my pots, baskets and beds alive when I was away for a week. A simple timer opened the water for 30 minutes twice a day (at 7am and 7pm). After 7 days, the part of the lawn that got the water had long, lush green grass. The bit that was out of the reach of the sprinkler was dry and sad. Everything else was the same:
