Hi all

My Vesuvius steam boiler on heating up has started making thud noises. Once at temp the thudding stops.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Thanks in advance

Could you take a vid and upload to YouTube and link it.

I’d ask what water you use poss scale and also UK/usa etc

Thanks for the comments. I thought it might be scale.

    • it’s a uk model
    • I have had it for a couple of yrs and it’s only just started to do it
    • Here a video of it:
    • On that occasion I recorded it thudding was mainly as the start of heat up
    • Water: I’ve always used Waitrose bottled water

I’m gonna take the mushroom out to have a look at any scales and do a descale. My favourite job 😞

A fescale of the service boiler should sort it, much easier than the brew boiler. If it does, it’s best to sort out your water to avoid other problems in the future

That does NOT sound like kettling/scale noises at the beginning (0:06 to ~0:45). It sounds to me as if a solenoid is attempting to open/close and is suddenly released; from about 1:00 on it sounds like kettling. Does the machine work fine otherwise? (ETA - don’t be alarmed; if Dave thinks it’s OK, his opinion on what is a ‘normal’ noise is worth 1,000,000 times mine)

Two years with Lockhills, you probably have a fair amount of scale anyway, especially if you use steam, so a descale is not a bad idea.

I do not remember seeing my anti-vac valve closing so slowly, which might be an indication for limescale. I wonder whether the (potential?) malfunction (delayed closure) of the vacuum valve affects it ability to open upon cooling and this results in the unexpected noise until the valve opens and closes again?
