I have just bought a new single dose Mignon grinder. I also have a ‘normal’ Mignon which I have converted by adding the single dose funnel and bellows.

The new single dose grinder comes with a SS dosing cup and an heavy SS mounting block which holds the cup just under the outlet. If I use it this way the grounds stick to the sides of the cup,I assume due to static build up. If I hold the cup in contact with the metal spout this is less but grounds still stick around the top of the cup. This didn’t happen with the other Mignon or an Ascaso grinder.

I am surprised that this happens with this heavy, all metal cased grinder as I assume the casing is well earthed.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there an easy solution?

if its brand new the static should settle down.

Why do you suggest this?

If the casing is properly earthed then there should not be any static build up. If it’s not ‘aging’ shouldn’t affect it.

Do you know something I don’t?

New burrs generate static electricity. Every new burr owner experiences this. Most folks run a kg or 2 of low cost coffee through their new burrs to “season” them. The static and clumping should diminish.

FYI, I sold my Eureka Mignon Specialita about a month after I bought it and bought a Niche Zero, as I just couldn’t grind a shot to my liking with the Eureka. The NZ burrs better suit my espresso taste profile, it’s easier to shift from espresso to pour over and back with the NZ, the machine is much easier to maintain and the workflow is better. But that’s just my personal perspective.

Thank you JHC that’s very helpful, I didn’t know this. I will stick with it and see how things change.

PS How do you add your equipment details to your profile. I could find how to do this - I added them to ‘about you’ but they don’t appear on my posts.

Add text in there and it should appear at the bottom of every post. 👍

Thanks. I have done this and hope it works.

MBdoc, static is a problem with many grinders,it is not whether it is well ‘earthed’. As said above components can generate static as can the movement of the ground coffee, the atmosphere and temperature can also generate static.
It is a very complex problem.

    Thank you Elcarajillo.

I used to have this a lot with my old Ascaso Mini grinders which had plastic outlets. I lined these with kitchen foil in contact with the metal case and this pretty well cured the problem, hence my reference to earthing. I doesn’t happen with my larger Ascaso Steel which has a metal spout fixed to the earthed metal casing.

I don’t understand why the static build up isn’t prevented or cleared by earthing.

It must be much more complicated than I thought!

Thanks for the link. A bit of a ‘towel round the head’ read. About as impenetrable as A Brief History of Time.
I did pick up the point about moisture so I resumed James Hoffmann’s technique of a light spray of water before grinding and this virtually abolished the static effect. Maybe I will continue with this again.

After a couple of weeks using the Hoffman water spray technique I tried it without spraying the beans this morning an, to my surprise, there was no evidence of static at all. Clearly the advice about ‘conditioning’ was right and all I needed was a bit of patience.
