Duo grind setting is really messed up

When you say removed, from the grinder or from the carriers?

It’s early days, but I somewhat sympathise with the OP. The Niche Zero is a lot easier to dial in - it’s almost “set and forget” for a given type of bean.

With the Duo, so far, not quite so much. The effect on relatively minute adjustments can be significant in terms of extraction, and I’m finding myself tweaking the grinder slightly every time.

Appreciate the burrs are not yet seasoned properly and all of that nonsense (I put approx. 2lb of coffee through for seasoning purposes), but I don’t recall having to do the same with the Zero.

Anyways, early days, and other people’s experiences have been positive.

Taste wise, I’m liking it. Once I get this grinder tamed in terms adjustments, I’ll do some side by side comparisons.

@thusband - I also removed the lower burr carrier from the grinder to take a look, and was wondering if it needed to go back in a certain position. Then the penny dropped and realised I’ve been silly as that is the spinning burr. What I did was to clean it all very well, then placed the lower burr carrier in the grinder, gave a little twist/spin with my fingers to make sure it’s sitting properly and adjusted the top screw as instructed.

Lower burr carrier has a key way so will only go back in one position, OBS if you take the burr off the carrier there are three possible positions, but I mark the burr if doing this

In terms of grind perhaps I’m not as fussy as others as I’ve found it very set and forget, working range of 4-10 beans and baskets depending. But I also just used it from the get go, I had 200g of a roast I did that I didn’t like, so ran most that through then go bored 😂

You will have less movement on the dial than a conical, but I’ve found no more or less from using the major, but I’ve had flats pretty much all my time in coffee.

Have you recalibrated? I can’t think of a reason it would be that drastically different, bar a clean grinder taking some grinds as retention first use.

thusband - maybe some trapped coffee at the bottom of the lower burr? Give it a clean, make sure it’s sitting properly and, before you put the collar back, press the top burr at the centre and make sure the carrier is sitting properly and making contacts with the springs.

Can’t think of anything else at the moment.

Flat burrs are a lot more sensitive to grind settings than conicals, it’s just the way they are.

On an average, I am on 5 for light, 5.5-6 for medium (for milk) and 3.5 - 4 for decaf. I have hardly seen the need to change during the last 1 month of use.

In my case, the sensitivity isn’t noticeable even up to a full point. Today, I pulled a second shot of the Crankhouse Jhoan since opening it a couple of days ago. I ground at 4 than the previous grind ref of 5. It just improved the shot time by 3s to 25s at 7 bars.

Of course, I seasoned each burrs set with 3KGs of cheap beans before pulling the first shot on the Evo.

thusband I’m around 15 for my wife’s decaf and 20 for my regular. I’m not sure if that really means anything. Settings seem to be all over the place.

Wow! Those are the grind references I used when my girl wanted to take some pre-ground for her Bambino (pressurised basket).

Espresso machine dependent, I guess.
