dfk41 when my drayton room thermostat started playing up I replaced the programmer and thermostat with the drayton wiser system, if you have a drayton back plate already its a simple swap and works very well. I believe some of the other systems aren’t quite so easy to install.
We had a smet 1 meter and an old style gas meter. So when I tried to join Octopus energy saving scheme again I was informed that the gas meter had to be changed, not sure why as the savings I thought were electric only. New meters fitted Gas and electric and only been in a month. No readings available on app so we cannot monitor things. The last bill we supposedly used nearly twice the electricity and a third more gas, and to add insult we were away for a week in this billing period. Does not add up.
I hear what you all say, but I did not say get a smart electric and gas meter. I was running Hive a long time before I haad a smart meter. All Hive, nest etc do is act like a portable thermostat that you can control from either the unit itself or from an ap on your phone. You take your bearings from the room that you are in. If you want to turn the thermostat up or down a bit you sit in your armchair!
Smart meters pose a different problem. The smart part of the gas or electric meter talks to another nuit that lets you see your usage. There seem to be many issues with this connectivity. My Octopus meter took a week or so before it came online and even now I sometimes lose connection. All I do is power the display off, count to 20 then power it back on again and that normally sorts it. I can imagine having a non functioning smart meter is very frustrating but mine works perfectly and I would not be without it.
The Hive/Nest simply hard wires in to your boiler replacing the exisiting wireless thermostat. How many people still use quill pens!
£250 at checkout. This is an incredible deal
That’s a great price for a good kit which does what it says on the tin. Had tado since May 2022 and it’s miles better thamn previously used BG hive.

We have had the hive controller for quite a few years now and it has always worked flawlessly for the heating and lighting, the only issue being if the tinternet goes down, but I guess that is the same for any wi-fi unit. As for smart meters we had to have one fitted in order to have a home electric car charger fitted to enable us to take advantage of thier cheap EV night rate. At the time Octopus said it would be both electric (smet 2) and one for the gas meter so they could collect all the usage details without us having to go into the meter boxes outside and take readings.
The electric smet 2 since fitting has always worked a treat but not the gas one. Why? Because the builders who threw up our house back in the early eighties, put the gas and electric meters on opposite sides of the house. The smet meter can’t connect or ‘talk’ to the gas meter, because the signal will not pass through from one side of the house to the other. So, I still have to take the gas reading and send them via the Octopus website.
My Hive has been playing up ever since they announced a beta upgrade which I looked at and ditched. Now using the original 9 times from 10 when I re-open the ap I have to shut it down then launch it again for it to connect
Have tried the beta upgrade but prefer the original so went back to it. Still using the original and have no problems.
