Does anyone have any suggestions / recommendations for a decent magnetic dosing funnel for a 58mm portafilter that works well with WDT? I purchased this one from Amazon, which sits on the top of the portafilter (although not magnetic) and it doesn’t seem very well suited as the coffee got between the funnel and the basket. It probably isn’t helped by my current WDT tool, which has hooks as opposed to just needles. I have a needle WDT tool on order, which may mean the existing tool will be a lot better, but was wondering what others use.
Recommended 58mm Magnetic Funnel for WDT
For those who WDT, would there be any / much difference in performing the WDT in the basket itself or a dosing cup and then transferring the grinds into the basket after WDT. If the latter works just as well, I won’t need any dosing ring at all and can just perform the WDT in the dosing cup
I guess you could say there are two reasons to WDT:
- Break up any clumps
- Distribute the ground coffee in the basket
If you WDT in the dosing cup and then dose into the basket, you may create new clumps and will need to distribute again anyway. I would recommend dosing into the basket and then WDT with a dosing funnel in place in order to distribute the ground coffee evenly in the basket.
I bought this to use with my Niche and it works well for me:
I WDT in my dosing cup, then transfer to the portafilter and WDT again. Doing it in the dosing cup removes any clumps at that point and then when I do it again it’s mostly to distribute the coffee evenly. I have tried just doing it in the portafilter but I can be more vigorous in the dosing cup so find it makes the overall process faster and simpler.
Thanks Both - think I’ll look into another dosing ring, but might wait to see what impact the needles have with the existing ring before I purchase yet more accessories.
What I’ve done is bought some miniature magnets (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tiny-magnets-2x1-mm-genuine-N52-neodymium-disc-small-craft-magnet-2mm-dia-x-1mm-/151445145416?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0).

Thanks prezes . It think I’ve seen that dosing funnel on Amazon. I’ve also spotted the one in your picture just to the left which has magnets - presumably this was no good?
I thought it was better to stay away from a funnel with a lip that that sat in the basket, which is why I went for the funnel I bought, but at least a lip inside would prevent grinds getting between the funnel and basket. Perhaps I can find a workaround with what I’ve already got, but interested to see what others are doing.
i bought this one, its perfect
spasypaddy Thanks. Do you do WDT in the basket with this funnel without any issues with grinds getting between the basket and the funnel?
prezes This looks really good. Where did you get the dosing funnel itself?
I recommend the Pullman Settler. It’s nice and tall and fits nicely on the portafilter. Very good quality. I don’t regret my purchase as it keeps my bench nice and clean when I do WDT.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I’ve decided to give the one recommended by spasypaddy a go.
This is the one I’ve got although not available at the moment. With magnets added it’s perfect as quite high and you can tamper through it if you wish to do so.

prezes How did you find drilling in to the stainless steel?
If I can find some small enough magnets then I am very tempted a there are other identical funnels available.
I used these and are a perfect fit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tiny-magnets-2x1-mm-genuine-N52-neodymium-disc-small-craft-magnet-2mm-dia-x-1mm-/151445145416?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
Drilling was really easy using HSS bit!

dutchy101 apologies i missed this.
i grind into a grind cup, tip in, put on funnel, stir with wdt, no grinds get inbetween its such a clean fit, then remove and tamp. but i could tamp with it on.
spasypaddy Excellent - thanks. He’d run out of black when I ordered this last week, but is going to send me one out tomorrow. If it’s a nice snug fit and there’s no mess between the funnel and the portafilter, that’s perfect.
Just out of interest, do you warm up your portafilter in the group before you load your grinds? Mine gets pretty hot and hadn’t considered whether this could warp the printed material.
dutchy101 i do, my portafilter lives in the grouphead. ive not seen any warping
Brilliant - thanks. Looking forward to receiving mine
Why is buying what appears to just be a simple ring of plastic or metal so complicated, and why after an hour of looking am I no closer to buying one. I can’t even go expensive as Rocket is sold out everywhere. Decent will take weeks to ship and really out of budget and most Amazon ones appear flawed.
