Does anyone have any info on how the indiegogo stock burrs compare to the kickstarter ones? It’s a little confusing, they said that they are upgrading the burrs for kickstarter backers, does that mean that they get better burrs compared to indiegogo and future buyers? Or does it just mean that the originally planned burrs for the kickstarter weren’t great, and they subsequently upgraded them for everyone? I backed via indiegogo and I’m wondering if it’s worth spending time to break in the stock burrs, or if I should not bother and just buy a set of SSPs.

I am one of the original Kickstarter funders. They recently told me there are ~95 of us with units so far. In Update #21, April 24, that announces the very first shipments, they also announce the upgrade to coated burrs, increasing lifespan from 250kg to 750kg. I believe all kickstarters have or will receive the coated burrs, I guess the Mazzer replicas from/thru Nuova Ricambi. discussed in this thread, which also notes Indiegogo campaign funders will get the ‘same’ style burrs, but from Machina Keber. I would think any spec on the Indiegogo is subject to change though. I am waiting for my start/stop button replacement and will report out my experience with the kickstarter OEM burrs once I can start grinding!
mackerel Let me show you the shaft alignment chart, that will help you understand why I am making sure the burrs are centered.
Shaft misalignment usually leads to angular misalignment. This is usually inherent and mitigated with design considerations. For example, The mailable piece they are using in the deva helps in resolving it somewhat and their good readings on the shaft makes it better.
Aligning the burrs through making sure they sit right smack in the middle of the carriers (if their spec is decent) will minmize the parallel misalignment. It is basically making sure that the burrs grind in a very uniform manner.
gobucks They stated that the indiegogo ones will be upgraded to coated mazzers. @DavecUK confirmed that the ones that shipped with the Kickstarter were OEM non-mazzer ones.
powderhorn That’s surprising that so many of the kickstarter units remain to be shipped out, since their indiegogo comments still suggest they’re on track for August delivery for those units. Hopefully the pace will be picking up soon.
Ok, if you want to double check if they are alligned properly and you have fun while doin it, that’s fine.
But people should not get confused that this is neccessary. In fact you lose your grind setting only if you do it the way you do it.
I did it the way like shown in the video and kept the setting and the grind result. So the way the Deva is constructed is absolutely fine for me.
That being said, i actually would say there is no need to take anything apart just for the purpose of cleaning, like i did.
The Deva is the cleanest grinder i have seen yet. Just remove the funnel, brush the funnel and the outer burrs for the very few particels you can find. I will not take off the burrs unless i switch them.
This was just posted on the indiegogo page:
Production & Delivery Update
Hello Everyone,
Hope you all have been well! We have been quiet on this channel as we have continued with the production of our Kickstarter units.
Firstly, we would like to thank you for your patience. There’s been a lot happening in the background over the past months. Due to the ongoing COVID and logistical issues happening globally, our timeline has continued to shift out of our control and while we were - until recently - in a position to catch up to the August delivery timeline, unfortunately we’re facing some additional set backs that doesn’t allow us to fulfill the timeline we promised.
The key challenge has been the delivery of the metal components. As mentioned, we were on schedule for an August delivery, but during an initial QC round, we made the decision to reject the components as the parts we received from our fabricator were not up to our standards. We did not feel comfortable delivering you a grinder with the parts that we had, and we are not willing to compromise on the quality of the product that you backed, just to meet the timeline, when issues can be relatively easily eliminated by postponing, allowing our fabricator more time to remake and QC parts. We are currently working with our supplier to fix the problem, and figuring out what the new timeline will look like. You will be updated as fast as possible!
This is our main priority before our Indiegogo production run can start, but we also want to keep you up to date with our entire company journey for complete transparency to understand the delays. We’ve attempted to outline the challenges - and solutions - below to give you and insight of our process:
Whilst we have been getting through our Kickstarter campaign, we have learnt a few things: We underestimated how hard it would be to go from a prototype to scale and manufacture our KOPI Devas, especially as we have been relying on a team of only 1 person on assembly - Brandon. We have learnt that our design for the Kickstarter unit was not conducive to scale our production due to the finer electronics and soldering work that was needed to complete this. Each element within the Kickstarter production unit took delicate handiwork and each task, while only taking a few minutes to complete, did not help to scale up production, and has increased our timeline significantly. On top of this, whilst assembling the Kickstarter units, we completed a 2nd QC, focused on the fit and feel of the components vs. aesthetics which was the primary focus of the 1st QC, before we had comparative knowledge of the necessary fit and feel, and the fine tolerances needed for efficient assembly. Similarly to our Indiegogo metal components, we have sent parts back to our supplier to be remade so we can complete our Kickstarter campaign. This is unfortunate, but not at all uncommon, when scaling up from prototype to production, especially with tolerances as fine as required for a coffee grinder capable of espresso.
Whilst setting ourselves up for the Indiegogo production run, we have changed some of the internal components for the KOPI Deva which will make manufacturing easier and faster for your production run. We will also have 2 more people on our assembly team. With the added workforce, we can form a more efficient assembly line, and speed up the process. Please note, nothing visually or functionally will change with the KOPI Devas you have ordered, all changes made to the final design impact our side of manufacturing and production only.
With the further delays, what is most important to us, is to ensure that we are able to deliver you your promised units without compromising on the quality. Your trust in us is of utmost importance and we hope to keep it this way.
We are almost at the finish line of delivering and fulfilling all of our Kickstarter orders which we will do before we start on the next production round for our Indiegogo backers. As I’m sure some of you have read through the Kickstarter updates, as of today, we have completed 76% of our Kickstarter units. Over the next few weeks, this number will not change as we wait for the additional components to arrive, and also deal with some personal issues. We will update you when possible, but in the short term, it will mean all tools are down and production will cease for a few weeks. We appreciate all of the messages that we have received and apologize for not getting back to you all, we needed more clarity on the timeline with our supplier before we could communicate individually to you all.
As we continue to finish our Kickstarter and move our full attention to our Indiegogo campaign, we will be more active on this channel and provide more updates. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. We appreciate all of the support that we have been met with, and continue to work towards getting your KOPI Deva unit into your hands.

Glad they are committed to giving us a quality product.
Had the same with the KS campaign. Well worth the wait.

Otaibimn That is great! I’ll use the Deva this way most of the time. V60 is my daily morning drink. I figured I’d be able to place the V60 brewer right under the exit chute. So simple.
Give that there are ~100 people out there with Deva’s, I am a bit surprised by the lack of content and buzz on social media. All i can find really is a couple basic vids on youtube (like the above) and a couple pics on IG, and this thread. I thought there would be a lot more buzz, and even some semi-pro reviews. I asked Kopi about it and their response was “it’s out of our control”. Anyone else have better luck or any insight on this?
powderhorn What’s a semi pro review?
A review by a semi-pro content social media creator? (Lots but not many qualified to review).
A review by a semi pro-grinder tester? (Not realistic).
A review by a semi-pro cricketer? :-)
Buzz is buzz, it’s fickle and largely ill informed. A lack of it is quite refreshing and not indicative of a problem. Companies who throw stuff out for kicks & clicks make me a little wary.
Seems as if you found a niche that needs filled. If you have the grinder, produce some content. Perhaps, enlist your favorite YouTuber to review it. Kopi Deva’s official instagram has “storied” content from the past year or so. But, I would agree with you, there doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of hype of buzz. Doesn’t matter to me as long as I like the grinder.
They probably didn’t give any away free to anyone,
If it’s a good product it will eventually get exposure, it needs to be readily available though for that

MWJB, appreciate your perspective. And concur. I guess by semi-pro i meant some of the more popular/better coffee folks on youtube. I guess the ones that come to mind are Hoffman, Hendricks, and Rockwell, but they seem to make a living at it, so maybe they are pros? I guess I was thinking there would be more online discussion and content from the actual KS folks that have the grinder. Even just basic stuff, like, this is my workflow, here’s some tips and tricks I found to get the best cup coffee, etc.. I look at my Deva everyday just sitting there, waiting for a new start/stop button, and wonder. It was better when i couldn’t see it everyday…. Cheers! I am really happy to find this thread!

powderhorn I’ve never heard of Rockford.
Hoffmann & Hedrick have day jobs with coffee roasters and aren’t really best placed to do technical reviews.
Anyone with enough youtube subscribers can monetise their videos, whether they’re talking about coffee making tools, or CIA space stations on a moon of Jupiter.
Put up a video of your grinder experience and update whether it gets resolved in a timely and efficient manner, that will be valuable. (I see you have already waited a week for it!)
In the meantime welcome to the world of the early adopter (…another reason to avoid buzz, review something after it has spent some time in the wild and see what the manufacturer has done to rectify bugs).

how much longer do you have to wait for the new part? I’m sure it’s a exercise in patience with a dose of frustration to have it in house but not able to use it!
once you get the part, I’d love to see your work flow with it.
I saw a random YouTube video of the KD and I had a slight concern. The top wood part seemed kinda loose and moved around when he was handling it. Hopefully not a big deal as long at the part fits properly and can be tightened. Also something on instagram where a guy had to re-glue the bottom wood piece because it had come loose.
