Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

simonc 20g out in 1min 20 @9.3

Is it fair if I say that this is a chocking point for your machine?

Unfortunately, I do not have this grinder to share my experience. Based on your grind references, 45g out at 9.4 in 1:10 mins, and 20g at 1:20, you are already chocking the machine, assuming you aren’t touching the burrs at 9.3.

A few questions, if you don’t mind me asking.

  1. Where was your average shot time before Kopi Deva, assuming this time-zone was your sweet spot.
  2. How did you like the shots in the case of 45g shots in 30s to 45s? Which was your best cup?
  3. How many bags of different coffee you have dialed in so far on this machine.

IMO, you may want to dial 10-12 bags at the best cup time zone (ie default grind size) and see how you get on. 😊

Burrs are 64mm Mazzer Super Jolly, specified by name on order so assume they have switched to the originals, not copies after they did the Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns. Price would now cover them.

Using 15mm VST basket, and a lot of WDT. Clearly not the easiest of baskets but I normally get a good result with the Niche.

Touch point is 9.2-9.1 and yes, I agree that those are choking my machine, which is good, in that I can grind that fine without touching.
However having 0.1 range from choking to a standard ish time for a long shot is fairly useless. I couldnt pull a 1:2 in 35 seconds without trying to adjust in the tiniest of degrees between 9.4 and 9.5. Or do a long pre-infusion that doesnt result in a turbo shot.

Using the Niche I tend to pull a bit longer time given the pre infusion, normally around 40 seconds, and longer if I was doing manual pre infusion with the flow control (having ground a bit finer).

My point is that I dont have that flexibility here. If I want to go 3 seconds longer, on the Niche that was around 0.75 - 1. The amount of rotation and change in visible markings equates to approx 0.1-0.2 on the Kopi Deva where I go from 35 seconds to 70 seconds.
Imagine if a Niche going from 8 to 10 had a 70 second change in shot time?

So far it’s had 1,3kg through it (according to Bean Conqueror) and this is the 2nd bean I am trying to dial in. The first I ran out before I could get a drinkable shot out of it.

This is a light roast from Django’s Insight subscription so not the easier, and I might grab some more standard espresso beans tomorrow but I enjoy drinking the lighter roasts.

10-12 bags will be a few months and I think the return window might have passed at that point.

I love the machine, the quality is amazing. The quirks with the bean entry I can live with, annoying that when you RDT the beans stick to the metal scoop so you have to push them in rather than just tip, but not prepared to live with a grinder with such a tiny useable range for espresso.

You should be able to dial in without worrying about a lack of flexibility; this is not just any standard beans but your preferred lighter roasts. It doesn’t help otherwise.

Hope the support can resolve it for you.

It seems you love the way the grinder is built, but the workflow and practicalities are not great. perhaps better to return it while you can?

This is suprising for me, even if I dont have the KD as my standard driver I have no problem changing the setting so the shot time changes a few seconds.

Wonder if you RDT more than me also, is very rare that beans stick to the metal scoop for me.

Do you use for espresso? How far from touch are you? What time difference do you get for a 0.1 move?
I use 2 sprays from their bottle.

DavecUK I will be requesting soon if I can’t get this improved in next few days.

simonc I can only speak from memory now, I have it as a secondary grinder and at the moment is is packed down because I will be moving soon. The smallest adjustment I usually made were about half a step, that would be 0.05, and I think that changed the shot time with about 3 seconds. I usually have about 20g of beans. Dont remember how far from touch I am but think more than 0.5.

Tjyven thanks. That sounds a sensible step in brew times.

powderhorn I’ve got the same problem on mine. I emailed KD and am waiting. This is my kickstarter unit and when I grind fine enough to hit 2:1 18g in and 36g out the beans won’t feed. When I coarsen the grind the beans feed better but the shot is too fast. Stock kickstarter burrs. I’m considering switching to SSP HU to see if that fixes it. DId you find an answer?

Clare has come back and said lack of consistency is due to lack of seasoning, and 1.5kg is not enough, and needs 3kg (instructutions say 2kg) I dont actually have a consistency issue, and the shot times are consistent, the issue is lack of control over the burr spacing. I wouldn’t have thought that seasoning would have a big issue, but will try another kg through them and see.
Apparently reducing rpm to 700-900 rather than maximum will also help.. Will see.

dcty What weight of beans have you put through them so far? I presume these are sufficiently seasoned?

                  • dcty replied to this.

                    are they not ssp burrs?

I have SSP burrs, some +4kg.

simonc No, they are not very seasoned, but that shouldn’t affect feed rate, just flavor. Seasoning certainly won’t make the burrs sharper and cut faster. It has Stock burrs which are Mazzer copy. 18g in, 36g out in 33 seconds and takes 2 mins to grind everything at about 500rpm. Faster rpms causes the beans to jump and they don’t enter the burr teeth.
