simonc what espresso machine are you using and have you had this issue with other beans? Doesn’t sound ideal though as judging from other posts it should have more espresso control, so if you’re sure it’s not a beans or espresso machine issue I’d insist on a replacement at the very least.
Kopi Deva
FadedFrontiers I have an ACS Minima. As I said above, I can get a 3-4 second change in shot time on my Niche Zero on same beans.
Also a lesser but still annoying issue. Sunday, I turned on the switch at the back to connect the battery. Showed 50%. 2/4 lights. Ground and made 2 coffees. over an hour Left everything on, and went to make another coffee 30 mins later and the grinder battery was dead. I am sure they will say to turn it off at the switch but really wouldn’t expect battery to die that fast when it’s only really lighting up 2 little blue LEDs.
Been told they dont do returns for pre-orders but I wouldn’t be returning as I dont like it, but that it doesnt function as a £800 grinder should do for espresso. And they offer espresso accessories so clearly marketed as an espresso capable machine.
wow, thats poor
it should do as intended or its not fit for purpose. and its not like you can sell it onto someone knowing it wont grind for espresso
have you tried different burrs in there?

simonc yeah that doesn’t great, how much do RPM changes alter shot time with same grind setting, in your experience?
I add say that the NZ is completely different with it being a conical (and a very forgiving one) so not totally comparable, flats can be tougher to dial in and more sensitive to changes in my experience.
I also didn’t think the minima had any PI chamber or setting, are you using flow control?
FadedFrontiers yes true, but just indication that the beans aren’t crazy to grind and yes on my old flat burr I could adjust for 3-5 seconds easily.
Maybe I am wrong, yes I have flow control, but not using whilst I sort out the grinder so keep consistent. I see the machine doesnt start increasing pressure beyond 2 bar until maybe 8 seconds and hits full pressure at 12 seconds.
I have the grinder for 20 months now and never had any of those issues.
I have a programmable espresso machine and the shots always end within .5 secs.
Only drinking espresso as well. Could not be happier with the grinder.

well first of all I adjust the amount of beans. Depending on the kind of beans and the age, I put between 19 and 20.4 grams into my 18 gram basket. After that it’s grind size. The 100% canephora beans last week had to be ground much finer than what I usually use.
And yes I adjust between .1 markings.
Rpm can also be used to do fine adjustments.
simonc yeah that’s the best thing to do as flow control can add variables. Really seems like you got a dodgy unit.
Out of interest has seasoning the burrs so far improved things at all compared to day 1?
FadedFrontiers maybe a little on consistency but not a lot. Consistency is very good.
Time difference of the shot was 2.6 seconds when grinding .1 finer.

mackerel that’s very precise. Thank you.
I think another user earlier said they see about 3 seconds per 0.05 so sounds similar. That is what I’d expect and sounds then very useable.
Very different to the 20-30 seconds I’m getting per 0.1
I’ll go back to them again and see if they will replace the unit. Is clearly faulty.
Also said I’d be happy with a replacement but don’t want to spend another 6 weeks testing and fiddling and having sub optimal coffee for them to decide if it’s working or not. Assuming they even accept this one isn’t.
simonc thanks to the details from @mackerel and @Tjyven Kopi have agreed to collect the unit and run a full test on it. Unfortunately due to it effectively being one man company, as Brandon is out the country for a month its going to be a while before I get any answers (so good thing I didn’t sell the Niche as soon as the KD arrived).
