I think the best thing is to check things people say. When the head of Ecotricity was pushing renewables and faced with the question of energy storage and our inability to store it. The glib reply was batteries, even though we don’t actually have any grid scale storage. So that statement needed looking into, and it’s cost/environmental impact. I was also sceptical of an energy billing firm and what their boss says. They don’t generate, or manage the grid.
I then look at the benefits renewables have given us, as we keep building more and more and how it’s increasing our energy security.
It’s all about searching the information to support the “facts”. If I can’t find it and the information isn’t referenced, then it’s difficult to know if the “facts” are correct. Sadly doing this requires time many people don’t have. As I said before, I’m a keen eco warrior, but also a realist, about what’s possible, as well as effective.
