Penance Unless the dose consistency is very much better then the Niche (unlikely) those Specialita grinds are still somewhere, likely snagged up in the grinder until nest dose and you just don’t see them.
If you have measurements that say different, I’m happy to be wrong.
Of course, not being able to see them might make you happier, but I’m wondering if you had a super tidy grinder that you thought was great, why change?
I haven’t used the specialita, but for the niche I tend to find static depends on environmental factors. Most of the time it isn’t really an issue, but occasionally a fair bit sticks inside the dosing cup. I find if you just tap the cup on the bench it’ll drop the grinds to the bottom and you can pour them in (or use the brush if really high static). Some beans seem worse than others for this, but it can come and go with the same bean, which makes me wonder if humidity plays a part.
Like others have said, if you leave to dosing cup under the spout it’ll catch anything that drops out later so there isn’t much mess.
I have a vague memory that it was worse for static when I first got it too, and it got better as the burrs bedded in.
MWJB my main reason to change was for ease of changing grind size. I believed the niche would achieve that, it has but there are also negatives to it.
I haven’t said I had a super tidy grinder that I thought was great, what I am saying is the niche has some negatives compared to the specialita.
hornbyben My experience was the same. Had a fair bit of static initially when I got the Niche but see very little now unless I grind coarse for filter. No worse off than the Specialita imo. I still have both grinders and use the Niche for espresso and the Specialita for filter. Occasionally use the Niche also for filter but never the other way round anymore as I find dialling in the Specialita for espresso a little hit and miss.
Penance Yes static has reduced over time but I can’t say whether that’s because of burrs being seasoned or some other factor. I think within 2-3 months of use it was noticeably better. I do dose into the cup rather than the portafilter. Any grounds stuck to the sides of the cup are dislodged when I stir the grounds with a chopstick before inverting into the PF.
I’ve been dosing to PF for ages and would like to keep to that work flow if I can. I did try the cup earlier but found no reduction in static, I’ll try again tomorrow with a stir.
I’ve own a niche for 3 years. For me, there’s no static issues, whether I use the cup or the PF with a dosing ring. I mean, yes, there are grinds which cling on to the funnel/cup, but a quick tap dissipates that. There’s no mess as such. I don’t see coffee grinds jumping out left right and centre as I used to see with the Kinu M68!
Maybe just need to season the burrs?

I think you may be right, the consensus seems to be let the burrs season.
Maybe I’m drawing conclusions too soon.
Also, I spoke with Niche today regarding the adjustment ring, they say its normal. I will perform the steps you described when I get some time on the weekend, just to check everything.

Bottom line: my initial NZ teething pains are receding and I am enjoying the grinder. I am still testing and tweaking, but I am confident that I will get there. This is a Titan class grinder for a very reasonable price. Stick with it!
It’s a brand new grinder. The burrs need to be seasoned. Till then you will get static.
It was designed to dose into the cup.
Use the cup it’s about 15 seconds longer tipping the cup into your pf.
The specilita used to clog around the clump breaker when I had one.

I know you’re not allowed to say anything negative about a Niche but perhaps it’s just not right for you.
Seems a shame to have to change your workflow or find little hacks to make it work.
Until the burrs are properly seasoned, you are not going to get the best out of any grinder! Sure, there are many thousands of people who love their Niche and some people who do not get on with it. Nothing is perfect but at the price point arguably there is nothing close to it. Persevere matey, give it a chance and in a few months if you are still not happy, no one can say that you have not tried!

its also bean depenedant, i have an awful bean atm it sticks in both my grinder,
they do need to be seasoned, dont forget there mazzer burrs from a commercial grinder designed to do thousands of shots,
fwiw ive never had much luck dosing right into the pf, too clumsy for that lol

Thanks everyone, i will persevere and hope the static reduces. I am going to keep trying with the PF as that my usual workflow.
When i make a shot later i will get some pictures, just to give context of what i am seeing.
Penance Regarding dosing into the pf……the Niche was not designed to do that otherwise Niche would supply that option. Grind into the cup, place the pf onto the cup and turn over, then all the grinds go into the pf!
i know the decent pf stand can be fitted to the niche, but it wont fit my pf anyways

Penance FWIW, I recently upgraded the burrs on my Ceado to Ceado’s own ‘opalglide’ ones - static and clumping went right up. I had the grinder stall a few times on a bean that the old, uncoated burrs were grinding with ease because of clumping and static within the grinder
I assure you that the chamber is normally very clean. This completely blocked the grinder!
Yeah same experience with new burrs here. I wasn’t getting the best results out of the Mazzer with new burrs for probably 10kg. Probably doesn’t take that much but mine definitely improved.
