Igm45 I think the defensiveness exhibited over niche as a brand is why there has been claims of bias on this forum towards Niche and against other brands.

I think you will find that’s true for all owners….those owner glasses make a big difference to perception. The more money paid, the better those glasses get. 😁

Parm it shouldn’t need that much torque though, it’s only holding the burr down so just a nip, the burr is turning clockwise so it should tighten the screw regardless.

So in this case there is something OBS wrong with it.

This shouldn’t happen, I’m lucky enough to have had in effect two duo and never had a problem with either but when you are spending any money be it £60 or £600 it should be right out of the box,

No manufacturer has immunity from this be it niche, acs, londinium, zerno they all have problems and it’s about working out how to stop it

I could write a whole list of issues from the above manufacturers but it’s not worth trawling mud.

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

Aye I’ve just tried tightening the bolt again there and you’re right the burr starts turning when you keep tightening the bolt after it’s screwed right down onto the burr.

I stop tightening the bolt when it tightens onto the burr and it’s never loosened off yet.

I measured the bolt it’s 39mm to the underside of the dome.

DavecUK would you be good enough to provide a link for an example, please. I might try this.

Niche got back to me with some torque recommendations, as well as to confirm they are shipping a new screw as a starting point. The factory torque settings are 15+/-1 kgf.cm, with 1.5Nm of force. I don’t have a torque wrench to check this, but am going to look into borrowing one. They encouraged me to share this with any others having the issues to see if they can get some data from those with the problem.

Funnily enough I’ve just ordered a beam type Draper torque wrench from Amazon for about £8 delivered probably too big for you though but worth a try for so little dosh, apparently they’re pretty accurate if a bit old fashioned now.

Parm The factory torque settings are 15+/-1 kgf.cm, with 1.5Nm of force.

You probably know this, but in case this confuses anyone 15kgf cm is 1.5 Nm. They are just different ways of expressing the same thing.

An easier way of visualizing this is that 15kgf cm is the same as 1.5kg of force on the end of a 10cm allen key. In other words not particularly tight!

It’s better practice to have friction to be the primary method of transferring torque from the shaft to the mating object. The keyway is supposed to be a backup. The screw is how friction is applied.

As Gagaryn says, 1.5nm isn’t tight at all which suggests the issue has nothing to do with people not tightening the screw enough.

Can any people with the loosening problem check whether the inner shaft is lower, equal or higher than the outer burr carrier?

DavecUK not posted before, just read. Probably sound stupid but the lower burr carrier rests on top of the inner shaft.

Think you might have this backwards - keyed shafts trump friction. Engineering! :-)

@tompoland have you purchased the Niche Duo directly from the Niche UK website? wondering about taxes/duty fees if i buy directly from the niche website into Australia.

Yes, @drdre89 bought two initially (with express permission for the second as they were resricting sales to one per customer initially).

Then a third a couple of months later.

Once shipping and customs/duty had been paid the average price per unit was AU$1,638 but bear in mind that my units were ordered with both burrs sets.

Expensive but still a lot cheaper than the AU$2,219 from a local supplier.
