Is it just me or is anyone else getting fed up with shop pay trying to take over every time you try and place a order on most websites, as soon as I got to basket I get this annoying code text to me to try and force me to use them.

Not sure what is the best payment method to use that benefits the retailer I assume they all take a cut but I try to normally log in using my email and pay via standard debit card

DavecUK you have a point there, but when on a site I trust e.g. coffee roasters I would like to know that the retailer does not get stung for additional transaction charges, at least PayPal does not try and take over the transaction

It’s supposed to speed up check out, which it does quite well. The retailer benefits because it makes impulse buys easier and encourages (some) people to check out if all they have to do it press a couple of buttons.

Think of it this way- a first time user goes to buy some coffee, they either enter all their details, set up an account and log in, or they enter 6 numbers…in addition, shop pay has order tracking and history built in if you use the app too.

I actually like it, along with the little ‘code from text messages’ button on iPhones it makes checking out an order almost instantaneous.

Apple/Google Pay also works similarly and makes checking out incredibly quick.

I know people understandably prefer different payment methods. Some people refuse to use anything but cash…

As a side note, I think Shop Pay is handled by Stripe which is one of the biggest e-commerce payment platforms so it’s definitely legitimate. It’s possibly implemented because it’s powered by Shopify which is chosen by a lot of retailers as it’s very simple to use.

If you really dislike it, I think you can opt out of Shop Pay by entering your number on their website which will stop it popping up.

The annoying code text is 2 factor authorisation and helps protect against fraud. No payment system is perfect but I quite like Shop. Shop has cheaper and more transparent merchant fees than Paypal. I don’t really see any advantages to using Paypal over Shop. Certainly don’t believe Paypal is more secure - https://techhq.com/2023/01/paypal-suffers-major-data-breach/

I hadn’t come across Shop Pay before, and now I’m curious how I’ve avoided it. I’d definitely be wound up by being cold-texted to use a different payment method.

I used to use paypal, but have all-but migrated away from that and use either Revolut, which I have a free prepaid card and use their ‘virtual disposable’ cards for one-time purchases . Otherwise I use starling, as I can still seperate off some cash to ensure the card doesn’t have access to too much money, and I prefer the in-app notification/approval when buying online.

It’s an interesting challenge from a UX design point of view, equal parts convenient and intrusive!

A better solution would perhaps be to only flash up the code entry if you’ve used Shop Pay to check out before.

I would expect to get the text once I have clicked on the retailers option to use Shop pay but these days I get it before choosing any payment options
