Does anyone have any thoughts on the gen 2 and how does it compare to the DUO please?

Terrible šŸ˜›

Duo is the best

Jokes aside Iā€™ve seen mixed views on the df83mk2, thereā€™s a big thread on home barista, have a look

@Teaboy If itā€™s the DF83 Gen 2 (often referred to as ā€œDF83 V2ā€) you are referring to as opposed to the DF83V, then in my opinion the Duo beats it hand down in every department other than the espresso burr that comes stock. And the latter is clearly a matter or taste preferences, but mine are not inclined towards the espresso from the Mazzer 151B burrs that come with the Duo. It produces very smooth, traditional espresso but these days Iā€™m looking for a bit more in terms of either flavor punching through milk based espresso or flavor note seperation for straight espresso.

Lance Hedrick did a comparison of the DF83 V2 and the Niche Duo and awared the DF83 V2 the winners gong. Full respect for Lance and all but from every aspect other than the stock burr set, I have come to a very different conclusion.

The DF83V is a very different beast to the DF83 V2 but IMHO itā€™s still not a patch on the Duo for engineering, design, workflow or aesthetics. The former has other attributes incluing variable RPM, a prebreaker augur, and the DF DLC Filter burr and the DF DLC Espresso burrs, that for me are very good burr sets. Not (in my opinion) stellar, but still well above the average burr set that Iā€™ve tried.

(Iā€™ve had 3x DF83 V2s (all sold), 3x Duos (1 sold) and 1x DF83V on my bench.)

If it were my money and I had to choose between them, it would be the Duo and I would not have to think twice.

But ā€¦ I would swap the stock burr out and replace it with a DF DLC Espresso or SSP Espresso/HU (a bit pricey) or Gorilla Gear (even pricier) but if you go down that route please note that you run the risk of losing warranty cover.

@tompoland Thank you for your advice there, wouldnā€™t it be a thing if Niche offered a set number of different burr sets to choose from in the way DF do.

Itā€™s not enough difference imo

Having had the SSP Hu along side the duo your talking 1-2% difference. It doesnā€™t warrant a near Ā£400 price difference imo.

If you want to burr swap honestly look at the 64mm platform you can have 3 burr sets for the price of one 83mm burr.

Cuprajake Thank you Jake, I will try and save for a Duo, I do like the idea of swapping burrs too.

I sold mine after purchasing a Duo.

Duo is much better in my opinion. Slower and more consistent grind.

The addition of the ioniser to the df83 improved it some what but it was just too fast and not fully repeatable.

    About Me

Cuprajake thereā€™s loads of grinders to choose from, if in the UK the duo provides great pricing imo

There may be other variables at play of course (beans, roast depth, water temperature, pressure etc) that would account for different experiences with the same burrs, but for me the difference beetween the 151B and SSP Hu burrs is very significant. Night and day.

But others like Jake will have different and equally valid opinions.

And there lies the age old taste is key

There are differences between them, for me the SSP Hu gave more sweetness and more acidity/brighter cups, I donā€™t know if that aligns with @tompoland experience with the burr(83mm) but Ā£350 ontop of a Ā£6-800 grinder alreadyā€¦..

For me there are more ways(cheaper) to manipulate brew than just the burrs

As I found with the mp burrs, once you get into them, they are slow, noisy and have a very small adjustment window, then you learn that people are changing brew water and adding drops to get different results, that was the nail in the coffin for them for me.

Cuprajake Ā£350 is that worth it, would the standard burrs be too traditional?

No, not at all your listening to forums and influencers šŸ˜‚

SSP Hu is classed as traditional if you speak to some

Cuprajake Hi Jake, I drink flat whites, straight espresso, americanos, filter I favour more fruity tones too so a grinder that has changeable burrs is ideal. Duo sounds good, also thereā€™s the new mazzer on the horizon too.
