I cleaned and calibrated my Niche Zero yesterday, and this morning I tried to grind my morning coffee. I had left the ring at the calibration point. After 10 seconds or so when I realized no coffee grounds were going into the cup, I realized my error in horror. The machine was not making any unusual grinding noises, or any metallic sounds like burrs killing themselves, but there you are. I took it apart and inspected the burrs a bit, and they look and feel sharp and fine. I am hopeful I did not do any microscopic damage here. I ground some course coffee for the morning drip coffee, and it seemed per usual. Thoughts here?
Ran my Niche by accident on the calibration setting
dndrich One of two things will have happened, if you couldn’t hear metallic screeching….
The calibration setting wasn’t quite at burr touching, or the burrs were jammed and not moving….neither should have done any damage to the grinder…burr jamming is designed to not cause damage….as the grinder will simply cut out on it’s one.
Just want to make the point (again) about calibration….as this post has reminded me by mentioning the word only.
The Niche only requires calibrating, if you have accidentally moved the black grind indicator ring (the clicky one). If you haven’t moved it the Niche never needs calibrating after the first month or so once the burrs have run in a bit. When you clean the grinder and put everything back….it always ends up back in the same position and does not need recalibration.
The screw thread only has one entry point…so it will always assemble back to the right place. It is worth marking the top burr carrier and always ensures it goes in the same way.
Yes, the only reason I recalibrated was because my wife may have moved the lower ring. So I took it apart and cleaned it, and then recalibrated. It was off by one click only. I use your method of calibration, by using thumb and index finger slippage for the amount of ring force when tightening it. It does seem fine. Interesting that you recommend the upper burr carrier go in the same way rather than 180 degree rotation, which is possible. I had not considered that.
