Have you used one of these puck screens?

I tried a side by side with the Profitec Move and my old Rancilio Silvia both using the Profitec bottomless pf. Much less spray from the Rancilio and much, much more crema, a real slow thick creamy pour from the bottom of the puck.

I’m beginning to wonder whether the Profitec is a refurb, this is the state of the brass unit which hosts the showerscreen which I discovered when I replaced the group head gasket a few days after I took deliv of the machine.

If you bought it online chuck it back under long distance rules perhaps

Fwiw the brass can discolour quite quick,

Dont forget both machines will deliver water differently,

As for the screens yes

It will slow your shot slightly and keep the screen much cleaner.

Also as mentioned either here or the other place already. Are you grinding finer to account for the pre infusion on the Profitec?

It’s difficult from that one part to say its recon . Id need to look at other components as the part shown could easily be new from a machine shop with bins full of these parts waiting to be fitted

I can see your point but its not a stainless part so more difficult to comment.

Where was it from. are you in a cooling off period?

When it was delivered were any alarm bells ringing to question it’s authenticity?….

I’ll just jump in and say the brass unit on our Lelit Victoria looked a similar colour when I looked at ours only a few days after getting it. I was surprised too, but figured it must discolour quickly.

marksp21 did you reduce the ground from 20 to 16-18? Any luck? You do not share much information on what you do.
The brass part, at least its colouration would have nothing to do with your issue, as the size of the holes in it has not been affected. It looks to me like a red herring. Bella Barista are reputable place to sell refurb machine for new ones.

Those things tarnish really quickly. Give it a few more months and it will be a dull colour. This looks new.

I’ve ordered the IMS basket thanks and will shoot for a 17g dose as you suggest. I really don’t want to return this machine till I’ve ruled out everything and anything at this end first. My sense is that it must be a variable at my end, in spite of my frustration. I’ve never ever used a bottomless of before so this looks like it’s showing me an issue with channelling (which I don’t think could be caused by the Profitec?).

Just waiting for the IMS basket to be delivered.

Did the first clean this eve with the blind basket. Machine pressure runs round to 10bar and stops dead there. I think the machine should be calibrated to 9bar. Could this suggest why I’m always getting gushers and should I consider adjusting the pressure down to 9 bar?

Success.

Two days on the trot with no gushing or spurting and a perfectly clean and neat cone of espresso from the bottom of the pf in a 25sec extraction.

What changed?

The Ceado E5P is not a low retention grinder and in spite of hoovering it out after every grind I found a good 5mm of compounded grinds adhering to the outer circumference of the lower burr. Disassembly, thorough clean and instant transformation. The burr surfaces were already clean.

I use bellows because of this issue and I guess they were blowing some of the older grinds into the puck at the end of the grind.

I discovered the retention issue when I first bought the grinder - 25g of beans in … 18g out… hence the bellows and the hoover.

My next grinder will be low retention…
