They sent me a 53.5mm puck again……😭

I am happy it’s working out for you guys!

IMHO, this is a hype. May be, this is just me.

Is it suitable for non-lever? Some like it for a variety of reasons; some thinks it is a thrash. I don’t own these type of machines.

If we look at the lever, it’s probably will fit into machines, which extract at 6 bars pressure to increase the extraction.

Those machines, which hit 9 bars or higher, already gets the best out of the puck.

Our Evo consistently hits >10.5 bars pressure giving us a fantastic cup. Sure, it disperses the water evenly. However, as @SL01 beautifully explains, it also pushes the extractions to undesirable levels pushing them to extremes; one may refer his post for a nice technical explanation.

Yeah, the shower screen is clean; the spent puck is a beauty, which I am not interested in. What interests me is the tasty liquid in the cup, which the beastly Evo nails it every time. The screen, unfortunately, spoils the output.

What about the shower screen? Either one cleans the shower screen or the puck screen. Cleaning the shower screen towards the end of the day takes a few secs at the max. We just give it a wipe at the end of the day. We drop the Evo’s shower screen every week. We hardly find anything to clean. We just wipe and put it back.

May be, I should permanently remove the shower screen and use the puck screen to avoid pulling an espresso on steroids! 😂

In summary, call me an old school or a week-end rant from an old man! But, this old man know a thing or two about coffee now !

Have a good evening and a great week end guys ! My Gin and Tonic is staring at me.

From my perspective - I’ve not bought it for any reasons other than giving me a solid puck to knock out and it has the benefit of keeping the group clean. It works on both fronts and does the job I bought it for so very happy with it.

I’ve seen various claims of how the screens mprove the shot and flow of water through the puck etc. - none of that interested me to be honest. I just wanted clean pucks and a clean screen.

Bluestarcoffee are now sending me my 3rd puck screen (yes you read correctly, for the third time). I pray to the coffee gods they send me the correct size this time, what a wild ride…

    Hello,

i have received the mesh from amazon. You say the thin shirt go in contact with the coffee puck?

    Thanks 😌

I put the smoothest edge up towards the screen, apparently this makes it easier to remove from the puck than the other way around.

Not sure it matters which way around you use them though

Just an update to everyone following my wild journey.

At the end they sent me the correct item. BUT they listed it wrong as 51.5mm, the size they actually have is only 51mm which leaves too much gap around the edges!!!

At this point I think I’m just going to carefully polish down the 53.5mm to fit my basket perfectly (around 52mm for a perfect fit)

dutchy101 You need to put the smooth edge on the coffee. The rougher edge where the water hits (it diffuses better that way).

I’ll give it a go with the next one. There seems to be so many conflicting opinions on this. lol

dutchy101 It’s a pretty new thing so there isn’t a consensus yet. Also all puck screens are made from one method and likely one manufacturer, so there isn’t any specific design put into making a puck for its purpose.

There’s probably some cool metal 3D printing and fluid simulations we could use to design a puck screen that can diffuse water coming from the showerhead through the puck screen in such a way that it would be evenly distributed and exit as nice laminar streams to prevent channelling. I might write a research proposal for that to get some funding 😉

I’m interested to try it the way you have suggested. I took a punt initially and went with smooth side up just so it didn’t damage the shower screen if it got sucked up against it. When looking about this yesterday, I saw a thread on Reddit with people roughly evenly suggesting each way up
