Hi all.

I’m interested in what peoples experience of pressure profiling has been. What are you’re favourite profiles, when do you use them, when dialing in do you just tweak grind to target time etc?

I guess I’m mostly reaching out to those who have a Decent (@tompoland, @Stevebee, @ronsil).

Since doing my Ito mod (see: https://coffeetime.freeflarum.com/d/256-poor-mans-decent-espresso-itoleva/59 if you’re interested), I’ve been trying to mimic some of the profiles I’ve seen online, such as blooming espresso and lever style profiles, but I’m not sure I’m getting the best out of them, and as a lot seem to be quite long I feel like I’m having to grind much finer.

I appreciate your insights in advance, and if you have a favourite profile please share it.

Thanks

@tompoland, I just had a go and it makes a very nice espresso. Very good texture and body.

I had to tweak a bit as from the look I think your recipe is flow controlled and I can only pressure control, but I think I got pretty close.

Here’s a recent profile using a Coffee Compass decaf.

Makes a very nice breakfast coffee with warm milk(not steamed)

Also good as straight espresso later in the day.

a year later

I use the grinder to create the pressure I want. Currently experimenting with lighter 4-6 bar shots

Turbo stuff.

LMSC I agree that trying to flow profile manually is more trouble than it’s worth, unless you are using something like a manual lever or DE1 to fix a less-than-ideal shot in real time. A lot of machines were really not designed with flow or pressure profiling in mind, as shown in your video. Whilst this doesn’t mean an approximation of pressure profiling is not possible with these machines, it does mean it may be more difficult to do repeatably.

The fact they can’t do this well doesn’t mean they don’t make delicious coffee, it just means they may not be the best machine to go for if flow profiling is your jam.
