I just picked up the used Super Jolly and when the previous owner demo’d working I realised it’s an automatic doser… so will require some wiring to get the on/off switch to function without the doser. I’ve got two black wires which connected to the doser lever (to auto-grind after 10 or so pulls) and two grey wires which ran to a flap switch at the top of the doser. These four go into a connector plug that plugs into the wiring in the grinder body. I’m assuming some combination of connections will allow me to run the switch as normal, I’m just not sure which! Thanks!

try to post pics the safety switch should just make a contact so in theory just need joining, but pics will help

Thanks, got it running. I removed the four leads from the terminal block, left the lever switch disconnected and ran a jumper between the other. where do the wires terminate from that block?

They were the four that went to the doser, two grey wires to the full switch at the top of the doser and the black ones on the switch linked to the lever.

Also… There’s quite a loud knock sound when switching the grinder on and off, sounds very much like a relay or similar. I tried to get a video but it doesn’t capture it very well. Is this normal or could it be a byproduct of my wiring job…

The noise isn’t that prominent now it’s all buttoned up. To be honest I think my Mini did the same. On the plus side, got the grind-by-weight setup I always wanted… 😂😂 Walnut bits are still on their way from Wiedemann in Germany but for now it’s dialled in and I’m pleased with initial results. Wiring help on SJ doserless mod

I thought I’d ask here rather than start another thread;

The switch on my SJ works like this - Click on to power on the grinder, then a spring-loaded push to start the motor. Then switch off to stop the motor (which also switches off the grinder).

I’m guessing the reason for it working like that is because in a cafe it would be left in the on position and the motor would just run occasionally when the doser switch was activated.

However, now it’s doserless it would be good to have a simple on/off.

Would it be possible (and relatively straightforward) to change it to an on/off switch?

@Ernie1 didn’t it already work like that? I converted my auto to simple on / off by:

Gently pull on the wires at the microswitch so you can see which ones they are on the bottom. Remove these from the terminal block.
Repeat above with the wires at the bottom of the doser. Use a short wire to jumper these 2 terminals on the terminal block. These are all that needs jumpered, NOT the ones that the microswitch went to. (adapted from HB)

Basically, your grey wires would be disconnected, and your black wires, jumpered.

Maybe you wired them the other way round?

Thanks yeah I wired it the way you described and it works well.

The question above was just a minor thing about the way the black switch on the side works. By default it’s a clockwise click to power on the grinder, and then the spring loaded push to actually run the motor. I wondered if there’s a way to just have it on/off without the sprung part.

I think I could have jumpered both sets of wires. End result would be OFF - ON -ON (spring). I don’t need to engage the spring loaded ON for it to start grinding.

I did it like 10 years ago so I wasn’t sure which was which.

Ah that’s a great help thanks, the functionality you’ve described is what I’m looking for. Just makes ‘topping up’ doses a bit easier if I’m using the hopper.

I’ll have another look at the wiring, I haven’t had the base off again since I first got it.

I think if I was single dosing it would be no probs at all, it’s just really to make it slightly easier to do ‘top-up’ quick bursts to make up the dose.

If I do go ahead with painting it I might see about changing the switch entirely to something like the Niche toggle switch.

Not a big deal at all either way!

I did it because I was concerned repeated use of the switch would ruin it, especially single dosing. I figured it’s easier to replace the wall switch than the Mazzer’s, lol. So I left it on and turn on and off via the wall socket.

The wiring on my automatic SJ seems more straightforward. I did not have to open the base.

Emc2 I think the “automatic” models have a two positions-only “main” switch - the other switches are in the doser… which you no longer have.

Yeah I had those wires on the doser that was originally fitted but had to reroute a few when I removed the doser to switch for the funnel.

I recall it was quite easy to make it so the switch turns it on (turn once then spring turn to start motor). Mine wasn’t the timer version. Also why do you think using the spring switch will damage it long term?

I was mostly concerned about the back and forth between the Off and the On. I imagined in a real automatic usage, the switch would stay On for the day, and only returned to off at the end of the day (if ever). For my usage , the constant pulsing (3 - 4x) per shot would require me to switch off - on for up to 16 times a day (4 shots).

What I would really like though, is :

-Off remains as Off

-On as off

-Spring loaded turn ON, but when released becomes Off.

Or, maybe I am overthinking it!

dilin Industrial switches are made to last a mad amount of cycles, you won’t have a worry there. I’m sure they didn’t pick the cheapest switch just because they thought cafe owners would only switch it on once a day. Mazzer were always known for robust products.
