  • Gorilla Gear burrs in a Niche Zero

You get it in all walks of life where people can make money.

They either leach off you or are jealous of you

Too many have too many fingers in pies

Personally I’m getting sick and tired of forum after forum being destroyed by people arguing and it is about money, regardless of what is said.

Re home barista forum. You cannot say your piece I was openly called a liar by a manufacturer, and when I responded I was shut down! By a mod ons breads buttered on the correct side for them ££££

I’m seriously thinking of fucking off all the YouTube shite, Instagram and all that shit. Let’s not forget without us as consumers the ‘reviewrs’ have no audience.

Fwiw I’m being blanked by lance on pm, 🤷

tompoland As someone who was run out of HB by the pitchfork brigade…

    It’s not a very exclusive club :-)

CFUK was a haven in this respect for most of its time (compared to H-B & CG), then when that went downhill/was sold off, this forum was pretty free of it (though we can disagree openly & still get on). This is perhaps the thread with the worst of it I have seen here. Hopefully now that can be allowed to pass like water under the bridge now.

So…I recall we were talking about the Gorilla gear burrs…?

      Totally agree

I’ve seen only a few things but we sort it peacefully.

Did either of you have bad burrs in the sense some on Facebook had really rough casting

mine are all good Jake. Producing stellar espresso. So far I’ve only tried it with medium and med/dark. Just waiting for son to arrive with his Niche so I can do side by side comparisons but at this stage it seems that there are less fines and brighter flavor.

MWJB It’s not a very exclusive club :-)

This is actually very true, I was speaking to Douglas Weber of EG-1/Key fame, at the coffee expo in Melbourne (seems like a very genuine guy, talking to all the punters) and he, like many of us, just doesn’t go there anymore.

lancehedrick It seems the niche burrs tend to create larger fines.

Unquestionably true. Which is why some love them and some hate them. And I totally understand both camps.

Personally, when I got my first Niche, I was drinking dark roast espresso and loved the muddy/chocolate espresso style that it produced and that’s probably doubly true of dark roast/milk drinkers. And given that something like 90% of cafe-frequenting espresso customers prefer a darker roast with milk (at least here in Australia), its no wonder that the likes of David Schomer replaced his Vicace cafe’s grinders with a line up of Niche Zero’s. He removed the lids and taped plastic cones to the top so they became hopper grinders! I have no idea how they fared with commercial use but for his Milanese style of espresso, he swears by the Niche. There is a very funny video of his set up on YT somewhere but I searched and could not find it.

But for me, the further I’ve gone down the rabbit hole, the more I appreciate medium and medium/light espresso and so the more I’ve moved away from the niche burrs for use with the Decent I have the wonderful 64mm flat Ditting burrs in the Moca SD. That in part was my motivation for trying the GG burrs.

        Horses for courses.

tompoland I have been enjoying my niche, even with light roasts but that probably have to do with the fact I’ve paired it with a decent and the types of profiles I’m doing.

Also nothing to compare against except my SSP ode gen 2.

Maybe one day I’ll have a decent espresso centric flat burr to compare against.

Hi when you said that u use a 5 to 6bdegree offset in rhe evo between bree boiler and grouphead, do u mean u set the boiler 5 to 6bdegrees higher than the grouphead? The nurri has a Teflon pad to insulate the grouphead from the boiler apparently I believe in order to disconnect both temperature wise so I’m not sure eif thta makes any diff.

chlorox do u mean u set the boiler 5 to 6bdegrees higher than the grouphead?

Yes, that’s correct. The insulation is there on the Evo too; however, there are heat losses in moving water from the boiler to the group, which is why an offset of 6-8 degrees keeps temperature in the group stable.

I have looked over your comments on lance hedrick which was not known to me before and I you implying impropriety on his part iwithout clear evidence s totally unacceptable. You should have apologised to him and that brouhaha was entirely avoidable…

                CoyoteOldMan

Thanks I may change my practice then and make a similar offset too to see any difference. Currently the offset is only about 3 degrees.

                  tompoland

Agree fully…we have to moderate the tone of our comments and be aware that no man is an island…we are all here for the fun of it and let’s make it fun for others too to interact with us…

I suppose from my post in this thread some might conclude that I think influencers are evil. Not so. It’s more of a case they suggest journeys in some direction or the other but in real terms people wont know what it means until they take it.

My thoughts on Niche when I had it new using a dark roast was that taste wasn’t correct. Nothing like it should be. Somewhat Costa. I was told use would improve the grind, It did and taste improved. Probably so slowly I didn’t really notice once the initial harshness went, I use various beans at times but stayed away from light. I tried those after something over 10kg had gone through it and didn’t have much of a problem getting the flavours mentioned by the roasters.

I’d be inclined to put the harshness down to too much fines. Results as new – I’ve done better with an SGP ;) but only with the hopper on. No review really mentioned this aspect of Niche. I experienced it so there is no point people telling me it doesn’t do this. I’ve used several grinder and rate some and not others but that is base on use. Also HU burrs.

;) The harshness - I do like strong coffee. It made a change for a while.

tompoland I really don’t like muddy chocolate-style espresso. Chocolate is fine but no mud thanks. I like fruit flavours. Never had a problem getting these clean flavours with the Niche but then I don’t try to pull shots at 1:2 or less.

HanceLedrick I find the filter paper has a huge impact in the cup too.

I used them, then stopped using them. Now I’m using them again and I think it’s worth it however I’m not fussed on the odd occasion I forget to put one in.

I’ve been using the Niche/GG burrs with a full city Kenyan bean this week and it is really stellar.

Hoping my son visits this week with his Niche (standard Kony burrs) so I can run a side by side test and confirm that I’m either delusional or if John Gordon (GG burrs guy) is onto something.

ajohn I had the same experience. Initially I really didn’t enjoy the Niche but as time passed something changed and I’ve been really happy with it. Hence the willingness to invest in the GG burrs
