hi all,

listening to the radio this morning, reports of car ins at a 21% increase in the last 3 months, repair costs cited as the reason and the labour and energy costs being the reason,

well from owning a bodyshop i can tell you this is tripe.

we are contracted to labour rates set years ago, my walk in charges £45 per hour, the insurance have agreements set at £25 per hour, with contracted sla of 10% parts discount, 20%paint discount and an overall 10-15% discount, payment terms 90 day,

with the raise in energy cost we are now allowed to add a one off £30-£40 uplift to cover out 200% increase in energy costs, add to that the last 18 months we have seen a raise of 65% in material costs and parts are super high, its the parts that are driving these costs, ive never know stuff so expensive, point a honda jazz 15 plate rear bumper is £505 now, that used t be bmw money….

i dont know its all money,

    hypothetical -

so car costs 10k and they write it off, they pay out the customer,

the insurance have contract with salvage where they get 30% market value, so the claim cost them £7k

salvage yards, sell the car at their auction site, atm they drag back about 50-60% market value claim has cost 1k

then the car gets repaired, sadly alot of these cars are bought by less than savory types and cars get stolen to order for parts, hence the massive car crime we face,

btw have a guess who owns the salvage yards…

By this point motor insurance feels basically like another tax.

I’ve got full no claims on car and motorbikes, almost 40 years old and all my premiums are sky high with such obscene excesses that there’s absolutely no point in claiming unless it’s a total loss.

On the new Harley I only got quoted by two insurers and I asked why, the answer was ‘it’s too risky, what happens if it gets stolen?’…. I’m thinking well isn’t that exactly what you’re there for??

just renewed our car insurance. We have an EV and were insured with M&S fully comp with one named driver which gave us the best deal last year. The new quote came in at an extra £50.16 that’s £4.18 per month. So I shopped around went on Martin Lewis website and go compare and a few other etc and every single one came back dearer than the new M&S quote. So we have stuck with them.

Pompeyexile just renewed our car insurance.

      How much did it cost?

Cuprajake well from owning a bodyshop i can tell you this is tripe.

It’s just another way the large corporates are rinsing us…as more and more things are bought up by corporates, the ability for fleece the public increases. They all seem to be charging the maximum the market can bear and they can get away with. Energy costs are a disgrace…the governments answer (that financial genius es… Truss and Sunak, the price cap. basically siphoning off tax payers money to maintain corporate profits. Banks, Airlines, Supermarkets, they are all at it.

Inflation may sit at 8% now, but I think we are all almost 40% poorer than pre pandemic….the pandemic being a great excuse to plan how to rinse us. For this massive increase in the cost of everything, we get even less e.g. Car insurance is mostly self service.

I had to make a car insurance for a new EV Plug-in-hybrid. When I checked last year for the same car, it came down to £450-ish. After waiting almost 11 months to get it, in June it cost me near £800 to cover the insurance (fully comp two drivers, the same as when I checked last year), which is almost double of what it used to be. One insurer after talking for over 30 minutes on the phone, told me it was too risky and new and they would not insure me. It is getting crazy what insurers are asking for. The aforementioned cost would have been higher had I not gone for significant voluntary excess.

Gone from £239.68 to £289.84. As I said fully comp with one named driver. We have everything including curtesy car etc. The only thing we do not have is breakdown cover as that is in with our leasing agreement. It is kept on a drive not in a garage (we don’t have one). The car is a Kia e-niro 64kWh with Thatchem 2 alarm system and is 2yrs 3 months old and was just over £39k new so do not know what it is worth now.

Probably still worth 28K, so that’s not bad.

Pompeyexile You have got a very good deal indeed. I was talking about Lexus NX 450h+ fully comp and two people insured.

He might have, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels said much the same in their Communist Manifesto almost 200 years ago. Some things never change.

Chop shops, Gap, is my guess. Got Kia nothing special Stonic, 1st year £1000 had a front bang renewal was £1700, got one for £875. Fully comp
