Last February, I bought a Bosch toaster through Amazon for the princely sum of £149.99. I expected something that made good toast! It did not, continually over toasting one side and under toasting the other. Anyway, last week it stopped working so I rang Bosch who said no problem, this comes with a 2 year warrant. Send us the old one back and if we cannot mend it we will replace it. So, I sent it back then received a phone call saying they would replace it but my model was no longer available. No problem I said, as long as it is an equivalent. So, today the replacement turned up. I checked onAmazon and this model is also no longer available and when it was, it was £84.62. I emailed Bosch on the address on the delivery note. it bounced back. I rang them on the number on the delivery note, out of service. SO, I rang another advertised number and spoke to someone who saaid it was not his department but gave me the correct email. I know I am old and grumpy, but I would really expect a better level of service than this. Hopefully I can wangle a full refund and buy a Duallit!

Infuriating shenanigans! Incidentally I was about to post we had the same experience with a Dualit when I saw your last sentence… not sure you can expect much better! Have a look at Rowlett. They’ve become a bit trendy lately but they’re commercial toasters used in hotels etc, bulletproof!

My issue with toasters, is the lack of ones with a proper size slot for anything other than cheap supermarket bread. I want a double long slot toaster and not these tiny ones that half my breada has to be hanging out the top and remain untoasted.

Sounds like I might’ve just had a bad experience with Dualit, lots of good reviews online.

Well, I have emailed Bosch, the right department this time. Until I get their official response, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Mind you, if I get a suitable replacement and it does not toast perfectly, that will be going back as well

@"Ernie1"#p50953 We've got a Rowlett. Love it. Couldn't get a simpler toaster. All user serviceable and replaceable parts - at reasonable cost. They aren't all made in the UK anymore, so if that matters to you then look closely at the model info.

Just get one of those conveyer belt toasters, they're awesome.

Had our Breville toaster must be at least ten years and it has always produced evenly toasted bread and crumpets too. Slots are reasonably wide which is good, because we don’t buy shop bread but bake our own and never cut thin slices. Over the years, the numbers have worn off the dials and I did try and get replacements, but as they stopped the particuar model we have years ago, they are no longer available. Not a problem though, as years of use and I know how far to turn the dials according to what doneness I want.

Fresh out of the oven five minutes ago…Ahhhh!

Just to finish this story. It was a right carry on speaking to Bosch. Their automated phone system does not offer tou a choice that matched my needs. Eventually someone spoke to me (and they were very helpful) and emailed the right department. They eventually rang, apologised and offered me a refund once they have received back the erroneous toaster.

Meanwhile, I am so impressed with making toast under the grill on the oven, that is what I am going to continue doing!

A Dualit classic is wonderfully simple DFK and every part is replaceable with available spares. Our 3-slot with rack for toasted sandwich gets frequent use here, it’s 3 or 4 years old now and I’m glad I finally bought one. Chatting with DC when I got it the slots sound wider than the ones that don’t take the wire rack but I still like this variation.

Oh, and you haven’t lived until you turn the timer only to find out you didn’t switch it on at the mains, lol! It’s manual of course, no pop up so you keep your eye on it but no fancy electronics or pop-up switch to complicate it.

Cuprajake Well, I decided not to go down the Duallit route. Mainly because like all things, a lot of the new versions seem to get pretty average reviews when it comes to making toast. I sat and thought about it and realised that every toaster I had, the toast itself was poor. So, I decided to buy this which has a 3 year manufacturers warranty, and co-incidentally, so far the toast seems to be even on both sides. I bought it at Sainsburys for £30 and am delighted

This is because they do two variant lines of toasters. The classics like mine and the cheaper ones with ordinary heating elements like in most other toaster and about a 3rd of the wire density for heating.

The cheap range of Dualits are no better than other cheap toasters.

Cuprajake Looked at them many times but for me, it is £9 dearer (irrelevant) and only comes with a one year warranty. From now on, if I buy a toaster and it performs badly it is going straight back…..luckily, the current one seems good. Let me know how it performs please1

I have a 13 year old Breville toaster that is not showing any signs of slowing down (it’s dirty and I can’t really clean it properly. I wish it didn’t last that long, so I had an excuse to replace it… 🤣).

We have a Magimix. It’s about ten years old and it’s a pain in the neck. The operating lever falls off and needs replacing at regular intervals. Only reason we keep it is that it does have a one slice setting, halving the energy consumption…

I had no idea there were two quality standards for Dualit toasters which perhaps explains why mine is pretty poor, always thought it was a bit short on elements. The best toaster I ever had was an Argos basics which cost about 7 quid and toasted perfectly. In my almost 50 years of toaster ownership I’ve found it’s pot luck whether you get a toaster that toasts evenly or is patchy.

This reminds me of a part in a film (Cate &Leopold), Prince Leopold is transported to modern day America and tries using various items, one being a toaster. He tries one press and the toast is not done, second run sets off smoke alarm. Cate from flat below rushes in , fans smoke alarm and says’ everybody in America knows you have to do it 1 ½ times. The princes response is– does this Mr General Electric not know how to make toasters that work.
It is obviously a very common problem because even the hotel toasters either under or over do the toast.
It adds to the amusement of people watching .
